THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE WIND SCALE EXPLAINED<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Hurricane Charley (Landfall: Aug. 13, 2004)<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">By all accounts, Hurricane Charley defied expectations both in strength and direction.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The cyclone rapidly strengthened into a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/hurricane-cyclone-category-four-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 4 hurricane<\/a> while over the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall near Punta Gorda on Aug. 13.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">An unexpected right turn in the hours before landfall caused the major hurricane to impact communities that weren\u2019t prepared for such a significant hit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The hurricane raced across the entire Peninsula and was still considered to be an organized cyclone when it emerged into the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA estimated that damage topped $16 billion, and more than a dozen people were killed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image component-center\">\n<div just a few weeks after Hurricane Charley.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Cape Verde hurricane developed in late August and reached peak intensity of a Category 4 while northeast of the Caribbean Islands.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Due to an eyewall replacement cycle, hostile upper-level winds, and land interaction, the major hurricane weakened into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/tropical-cyclone-explainer-category-two\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 2<\/a> before landfall along Florida\u2019s Treasure Coast.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Despite weakening, the hurricane\u2019s extensive size caused hundreds of miles of gusty winds and flooding, which led to more than $10 billion in damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">More than 40 deaths were tied to the hurricane, but the season\u2019s strongest and most catastrophic event was still on the horizon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image 16, 2004)<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While not a direct landfall on the Sunshine State, the worst of what Hurricane Ivan produced occurred throughout the western Panhandle.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The cyclone developed off the coast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa<\/a> before making the long trek through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, finally making landfall around Gulf Shores, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Similar to Frances, Ivan did not impact the Lower 48 at maximum strength, which was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/tropical-cyclone-five-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 5<\/a> with winds of 165 mph.
