Just like Norman Bates said in <em>Psycho, <\/em>\u201cWe all go a little mad sometimes.\u201d However, a new Xbox ad campaign has us a little concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft launched a new marketing campaign for its Xbox consoles and cloud gaming service called \u201cThis is an Xbox.\u201d It features posters and commercials with a bunch of different objects like a laptop, a smartphone and a Meta Quest 3 that are all \u201can Xbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We confirmed with a thorough fact check that all of those objects are not an Xbox. That may sound like overkill but when you live in a world where there\u2019s a real chance that the goopy mass voiced by Tim Curry in <em>FernGully <\/em>might become Secretary of the Interior, we\u2019re not taking any chances.<\/p>\n<p>The commercial is even trippier. It zips between objects like a flat screen TV, an ROG Ally and a laptop while Black Sheep\u2019s \u201cThe Choice is Yours\u201d blasts in the background. This time though, it displays the simple sentence \u201cThis is an Xbox\u201d with a secondary clause or imperative statement behind it. Is there some kind of malware virus in the AI software that runs our universe or something?<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"23b6bdaa-2d65-5f54-9ce9-f6fb77f68a5a\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IYBSNQLsBKk?si=i3hx8vx2OXYbx0F5\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Xbox - This Is an Xbox\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IYBSNQLsBKk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Microsoft, we know this is an ad campaign and that you don\u2019t really believe these non-Xbox items are \u201can Xbox.\u201d Of course, you want to talk up your cloud gaming service, which is available across all of the devices in the ads. But last I checked, I didn&#8217;t need an expensive subscription to play games on a regular Xbox.<\/p>\n<p>Also this is the internet, a gathering place for conspiracy weavers, liars and ne\u2019er-do-wells. Reality is hard enough right now without having to debate the merit of what things are.
