But the moon will appear full to the naked eye about a day before and after its peak, said Noah Petro, chief of NASA\u2019s Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cThere is a moment in time when the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/5187\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:moon is its fullest;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">moon is its fullest<\/a>, but if it\u2019s cloudy or you\u2019re busy, going out any other time either a day before, later in the evening or the following day you will still see the beauty that is the full moon,\u201d Petro said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A supermoon occurs when the moon\u2019s full phase coincides with its perigee, its closest approach to Earth in its orbit, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/supermoons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to NASA;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to NASA<\/a>, making the moon appear slightly bigger and brighter than on average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">November\u2019s full moon is the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersalmanac.com\/full-moon-dates-and-times\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fourth consecutive supermoon;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">fourth consecutive supermoon<\/a> this year and will be slightly farther away than October\u2019s full moon, which was the closest moon of 2024 and was captured in photos <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/17\/science\/gallery\/october-2024-hunters-moon\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:all over the world;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">all over the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">But the beaver moon could still offer a distinct sight to behold. Petro recommends viewing the moon while it is rising for a chance to see a \u201c<a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/moon\/the-moon-illusion-why-does-the-moon-look-so-big-sometimes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:moon illusion;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">moon illusion<\/a>\u201d as it climbs above the horizon, where the supermoon could look even bigger than usual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Scientists don\u2019t really know why this optical illusion happens, but it\u2019s believed to result from a combination of how our brain processes visual information and the moon\u2019s size in comparison with smaller objects near the horizon, such as trees or the roofs of houses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In addition to observations from Earth, current space missions such as NASA\u2019s <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/lro\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter<\/a>, which has been collecting data on the moon since 2009, help enhance our understanding of the moon, Petro said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cWe\u2019re still mapping the moon. Dogukan Keskinkilic\/Anadolu Agency\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cLook half-way up in the sky as most of the meteors will appear in the lower half of the sky,\u201d Lunsford said in an email. \u201cView as late as possible as more Leonids will be seen prior to dawn than near midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">For amateur astronomers who want to get involved with data collecting on space objects, Lunsford pointed to online fireball report forms that can help scientists study meteor shower activity, such as the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/fireballs.imo.net\/members\/imo\/report_intro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one from the International Meteor Organization;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">one from the International Meteor Organization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cFrom these reports astronomers get a better idea of when the Earth encounters these meteors and the strength of this activity,\u201d he added. \u201cThis allows them to produce more accurate predictions for future Leonid showers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"upcoming-celestial-events\">Upcoming celestial events<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The last full moon of 2024 will be the cold moon on December 15, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersalmanac.com\/full-moon-dates-and-times\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the Farmers\u2019 Almanac;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to the Farmers\u2019 Almanac<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The Leonids will be seen blazing in the night sky until the shower\u2019s finality on December 2, according to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:American Meteor Society;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">American Meteor Society<\/a>.
