At least 95-percent coverage with two doses of the measles\/rubella vaccine is needed to prevent outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>But in 2023, only 83 percent of children worldwide received their first dose of the measles vaccine through routine health services \u2013 the same level as in 2022 but down from 86 percent before the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/pandemic\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73047\" data-postid=\"143708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Only 74 percent received their second dose last year, the study showed.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<h2>Stop the virus<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Measles vaccine has saved more lives than any other vaccine in the past 50 years,&#8221; WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/14-11-2024-measles-cases-surge-worldwide--infecting-10.3-million-people-in-2023\">said<\/a> in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To save even more lives and stop this deadly  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/virus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73053\" data-postid=\"143708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">virus<\/a> from harming the most vulnerable, we must invest in immunisation for every person, no matter where they live.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>CDC director Mandy Cohen said: &#8220;The measles vaccine is our best protection against the virus, and we must continue to invest in efforts to increase access.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>As a result of global gaps in vaccination coverage, 57 countries experienced large and disruptive measles outbreaks in 2023, up from 36 countries a year earlier, the study showed.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>All regions except the Americas were impacted, it said, with nearly half of all large and disruptive outbreaks occurring in the African region.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The virus that can cause a rash,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/fever\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73066\" data-postid=\"143708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">fever<\/a> and flu-like symptoms but also particularly severe complications in young children is estimated to have killed 107,500 people in 2023, most of them under the age of five.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143074\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/BandaidOnArmAfterVaccine_R_U_642.jpg\" alt=\"Gloved hands applying a bandaid to a child's arm\" width=\"642\" height=\"429\" class=\"size-full wp-image-143074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/BandaidOnArmAfterVaccine_R_U_642.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/BandaidOnArmAfterVaccine_R_U_642-621x415.jpg 621w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/BandaidOnArmAfterVaccine_R_U_642-600x401.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The measles vaccine is our best protection against the virus.
