While business before the 2024 race felt similar to 2016 and 2020, this year has also brought more unpredictability.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzce5r0000356m4gfwggpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sales petered out in the months ahead of Election Day as businesses and shoppers paused their purchases while waiting for an outcome. Sales for their handcrafted products, made from whiskey and wine barrels, bounced back as soon as the race was called.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hw6d1m004k356muqzmp9gk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the post-election environment is hitting different this time around for many small business owners, such as Barrel-Art\u2019s Michael Prieto, and leaving them wondering what comes next.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr0006356mtmhqvkqr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While President-elect Donald Trump will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2024\/results\/president?election-data-id=2024\">familiar face in the White House<\/a>, his campaign trail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/28\/politics\/trump-extreme-closing-argument\/index.html\">rhetoric was amplified<\/a> and ambitious, sweeping policy proposals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/12\/business\/economy-trump-inflation-larry-summers\/index.html\">have raised more questions than answers<\/a>, said John Arensmeyer, founder and chief executive of Small Business Majority, a center-left business advocacy group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr0007356mgtnlawpe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think business owners don\u2019t know how much of what they\u2019ve heard from the president-elect on the campaign is real, how much is going to actually happen and how much he can do,\u201d Arensmeyer said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr0008356mu8jayi1s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For business owners who already were unsettled about the economy or its direction prior to the election, navigating the months and years ahead could be even more precarious, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr0009356m79u4w2c2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just pure uncertainty,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hwqcoo0050356mate94kln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Barrel-Art\u2019s Prieto, his biggest question mark is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/08\/politics\/tariffs-donald-trump-strategy\/index.html\">how tariffs<\/a> or trade restrictions could ripple through his US-based suppliers and make materials harde\ufeffr to obtain or more costly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hwe67c004p356m58mhxy5f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI want to be optimistic, but I\u2019m skeptical as well on some of the proposed policies,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000b356mi55430es@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the months leading up to the election, Prieto was taking a wait-and-see approach. He didn\u2019t want to send Barrel-Art down two different scenarios.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000c356maj92gli7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A week after the election, Prieto said he was very hopeful that his small, family-owned business could benefit from any \u201cMade in America\u201d pushes from the new administration as well as a more favorable lending environment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000e356mj5c2ydi0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Barrel-Art is running a lot leaner staffing-wise than Prieto would want it to be, which means longer hours for him. So if people don\u2019t have the disposable income, our products are going to fall to the wayside.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000f356mgwu5k8be@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Barrel-Art also is heading into the busy Christmas season carrying bigger credit card debt because of the combination of slower sales due to the election and the business still trying to recover from a destructive fire a year ago, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000g356mhedrqve8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prieto said he\u2019d love to see the return of some small business lending products similar to the Economic Injury Disaster Loans that were made available during the pandemic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000h356mx4mg1jiy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve had to borrow more than we normally would have, so it would have been nice if we had access to cheaper money,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000j356mc0xgtm9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Small Business Majority has yet to conduct a full post-election survey of businesses, but in the days since the election was decided, Arensmeyer and colleagues have heard some similar themes from its network of 80,000 small businesses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000k356m0euazr4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The biggest areas of concerns were tariffs and the potential impacts to supply chain and costs; stricter immigration policies, including mass deportations, which could affect food and labor supply; whether Affordable Care Act subsidies will be left to die on the vine in 2025; and whether federal contracts will no longer favor women- and minority-owned businesses, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm3htvaxb00073b6mr1gx0ppn@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-2176706068.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-resizes=\"\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176706068.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176706068.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176706068.jpg?q=w_1015,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176706068.jpg?q=w_1160,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176706068.jpg?q=w_680,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176706068.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\" alt=\"Shipping containers at the Port of Newark on October 4 in New Jersey.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqkr000l356mgmfm1v2f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Small business owners, by their nature, are optimistic, he said. However, some have already started loading up on inventory from China or holding off on making new hires until things get clearer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hpfblg003g356mi1uqtcjn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Man &amp; Machine, which makes waterproof keyboards and computer mice primarily for the medical field, is ramping up imports and cramming in a year\u2019s worth of production in four to five months to try to avoid the brunt of any price hikes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hppw430045356m3hk6b8pp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf I wait, I\u2019ve lost,\u201d said Clifton Broumand, founder and CEO of the Maryland-based company. \u201cIf I don\u2019t have enough inventory in place, I\u2019m going to pay a 20% tax, and people will not buy my product.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000q356m0v6kluzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some small business owners, like daycare owner Janna Rodriguez, are pushing harder on the advocacy front. She said the country\u2019s child care infrastructure desperately needs help from the federal government.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000s356mrukt8y0z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of those specific recommendations include establishing an enrollment-based versus an attendance-based payment system, greater public-private collaborations, professional development for educators, a comprehensive benefits system, a tiered reimbursement system and infrastructure grants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000t356my7oupec9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rodriguez has been an early childhood educator for 11 years. Six years ago, she opened the Innovative Daycare Corp., a home-based child care business that serves primarily low-income and minority families in the Freeport, New York, area.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000u356m4clzwl83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although her business plays <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/28\/economy\/child-care-labor-force-declines\/index.html\">a critical role in the economy<\/a> \u2014 allowing parents to be fuller participants in the labor force \u2014 it also faces challenges similar to others in the industry, she said, noting her daycare is \u201cstretched and under-resourced.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000v356mq19jr84h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And if federal funding were to be cut, she fears she\u2019d have to let go of one of her three full-time staff members, which would put the center out of compliance and force a smaller capacity, she said. At a time when the daycare industry already has had to cut back on meals and hold off on hiring part-time staff, Rodriguez fears she\u2019d not be that lifeline for families in need.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000w356m4im93g17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can\u2019t put profits over children,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3hpini9003m356m7i9f1a4d@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"you-deal-with-the-hand-youre-dealt\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        You \u2018deal with the hand you\u2019re dealt\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000y356mnru7sgm6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the Monday before Election Day, JD Opel opened ICON Hair Studio in downtown Evansville, Indiana.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks000z356mkio68cog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s the pit in your stomach, that \u2018Oh God, what\u2019s going to happen?\u2019 They\u2019re both so different,\u201d he said of the two presidential candidates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks0010356mqgj331w9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He and his customers were surprised by the results<strong> <\/strong>of the election, but the 20-year hair industry veteran said he\u2019s taking a simple approach:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks0011356mpxwu6uly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s like poker,\u201d Opel said. \u201cYou deal with the hand you\u2019re dealt, and you just roll with it, and play as much as you can so that you can still win \u2026 even though I don\u2019t agree with a lot of (Trump\u2019s) policies or the way he thinks, he\u2019s still my president, and I have to trust and believe and hope that he\u2019s going to help me out just as much as Some of Opel\u2019s biggest concerns are around the extent of tariffs and what that could mean for his hair products and supplies that come from overseas. Additionally, if those tariff-related costs were to be passed on to households \u2014 as economists have warned \u2014 Opel said he\u2019s worried that his customers\u2019 finances will take a hit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks0013356m06jyadht@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve always said it\u2019s a recession-proof business; I lived through 2008 and that whole crisis then,\u201d he said of the Great Recession. \u201cAnd we actually saw growth in our industry, because we wanted to feel good. But what if we aren\u2019t really that recession-proof? What if we aren\u2019t going to survive tariffs and all these hikes on the cost of goods?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfqks0014356mhmc9lxs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut, hopefully, fingers crossed, we are that recession-proof industry and business that people still want to come feel good and don\u2019t care if they\u2019re going to spend money.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnljgp001b356mbmd7dk3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Opel, Prieto and others expressed hope that small businesses like theirs could benefit from any expansion of tax cuts, another business owner jumped right into expansion mode after Trump was declared victor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnn3of001h356mdpzbtj38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jeff Wood\u2019s Coldwater Capital is a real estate development business with projects ranging from small multi-family properties to self-storage properties and express car washes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ho0m34001k356m0lwan36e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn 2018, we started developing these car washes, primarily in Florida, Georgia and Utah and we\u2019ve expanded into Pennsylvania and Maryland,\u201d Wood said. \u201cAnd one of the things that really put fuel on that fire for us was the Trump tax cuts.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ho8myg001n356moavcgswm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the provisions within the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was hyper-depreciation benefits for businesses such as car washes, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hnfj7w0000356meczcvs0w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The tax benefits excited some investors, who backed the expansion of the facilities, which now total 35 across five states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hohglq001t356mt9eviaov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThrough those 35 car washes, we typically have about 10 people on payroll for each of those, so it\u2019s been about 350 people we\u2019ve been able to employ,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hokgsd001v356m8l85jn5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But during the past 18 months, growth plans stalled in the high interest rate environment and investor concerns that the tax deductions could burn off if certain TCJA provisions were to expire next year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hob33y001q356m0fl2bdfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf a typical car wash costs us $6 million to build, with interest rates going as high as they have, it\u2019s been difficult to make the numbers work,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hokitx001y356mxqpdgl17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That investor sentiment changed after Trump was elected, he said, adding that he put two new sites under contract in the days after the election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3homizm0021356mbtm5li2b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The impending Trump administration could have a significant effect on a Los Angeles-based talent agency and, its owner fears, a chilling effect on human rights.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hoxa4h002h356mo0mfeyhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" Management\u2019s founder and owner. \u201cThey love a good drag show, it enhances diversity, and it\u2019s just fun.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hpalfc003a356mqtbgf9lr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Through these events, the hope is to build community, understanding, \u201cplant the seeds to make generational change,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder events and programs<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hpahaz0037356m6y159wv1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With Trump headed to the White House and a Republican-controlled Congress, Marcuse fears those efforts could easily spread.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hp7luy0031356mevc92wrv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHate is difficult; hate, when it impacts your bottom line is even more so,\u201d he said. \u201cNobody wants to wander the world feeling like they\u2019re a pariah and then lose their income on top of it.
