Kennedy Jr.<\/a> to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, questions immediately arose <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/12\/health\/robert-kennedy-jr-fda.html\" title=\"\">about how the department would change<\/a> if it were to be led by someone who has expressed skepticism toward vaccines and a resistance <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/06\/us\/politics\/robert-kennedy-jr-donald-trump-health-care.html\" title=\"\">to public health measures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If confirmed, Mr. Kennedy, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/23\/us\/elections\/rfk-jr-suspends-campaign-presidential-race.html\" title=\"\">who ended his presidential campaign<\/a> in August and endorsed Mr. Trump, would run a department whose divisions manage billions of dollars and regulate the nation\u2019s food, medications, vaccines and medical treatments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The H.H.S. oversees 13 divisions that administer services and conduct research through various agencies and offices, including:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-673bad88\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/about\/cdc\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">C.D.C.<\/a> helps track food-borne illnesses, makes recommendations on vaccines and tracks outbreaks of infectious diseases such as the flu and measles. For instance, the agency recently coordinated with states to track illnesses and coordinate the response to a listeria outbreak related <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/30\/health\/listeria-outbreak-boars-head-deli-meat.html\" title=\"\">to Boar\u2019s Head meat<\/a>, and to an E. coli outbreak related <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/22\/health\/ecoli-outbreak-mcdonalds-hamburgers.html\" title=\"\">to McDonald\u2019s Quarter Pounders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agency also inspects public health labs and oversees safety protocols meant to safeguard the public from lab leaks of infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/about\/media\/pdfs\/cdc-org-chart.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The C.D.C. oversees 10 centers and institutes<\/a>, including the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/about\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health<\/a>. NIOSH helps guide the government on regulations meant to prevent work-related injuries and illnesses through research and recommendations. NIOSH was established alongside the Department of Labor\u2019s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to collaborate <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/niosh-science-blog\/2021\/09\/09\/respirator_roles\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on work safety issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2b849c2f\">National Institutes of Health<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">N.I.H.<\/a> wields billions of dollars in funding for studies on the treatment of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer\u2019s.
