I work across from a gun store, and I always see people carrying around loaded rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Along with taking his concealed carry class, Sparks faces the more banal tasks of making sure all of his documentation is in order. This week, he met with an advocate about getting his <a href=\"https:\/\/transequality.org\/issues\/identity-documents-privacy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">name legally changed<\/a> but was told that due to the sluggish pace of family court, he probably won\u2019t get a court date until next summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">An existential threat, and a bureaucratic nightmare: for trans people across America, Trump\u2019s victory represents a terrifying acceleration of the discriminatory policies that conservative lawmakers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/attacks-on-gender-affirming-care-by-state-map\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">already put in place<\/a> in states across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\"><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7174687\/what-donald-trump-win-means-for-lgbtq-rights\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Republicans spent<\/a> almost $215m on anti-trans ads this election. (Sample line: Kamala Harris \u201cis for they\/them \u2013 not you\u201d.) Trump\u2019s official platform, Agenda 47, promises to \u201ccut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children\u201d and \u201ckeep men out of women\u2019s sports\u201d, a reference to trans women and girls playing on teams that correspond to their identity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"53bf8392-9bfc-4293-9b7c-9c3e9b9a2469\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"element  element--richLink element-richLink dcr-1your1i\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:7,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;\u2018This victory is a mandate\u2019: rightwing groups ready with policy proposals for new Trump administration&quot;,&quot;elementId&quot;:&quot;53bf8392-9bfc-4293-9b7c-9c3e9b9a2469&quot;,&quot;role&quot;:&quot;richLink&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/08\/trump-project-2025-rightwing-policy-influence&quot;},&quot;ajaxUrl&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk&quot;,&quot;format&quot;:{&quot;design&quot;:18,&quot;display&quot;:0,&quot;theme&quot;:0}}\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The president-elect has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-vows-stop-gender-affirming-care-minors-re-elected-president-rcna68461\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">proposed<\/a> a ban on federal funding for gender-affirming care, and said he would push schools to \u201cpromote positive education about the nuclear family\u201d \u2013 shorthand for an emphasis on conservative Christian gender roles and values in public classrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Experts and advocates warn that Republican control in Washington DC could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2024\/sep\/24\/donald-trump-presidency-republican-lawmakers-targeting-lgbtq-policies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">roll back LGBTQ+ rights decades<\/a>, threatening trans healthcare, marriage equality and the overall safety of the queer community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Facing this new reality, Alex, a teacher in Texas, reached out to a crisis hotline three times in the past week. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of the most depressed I\u2019ve been in a long time,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like you get used to tolerating a certain amount of not OK, and having to hide and sort of being pushed down, but it feels like it\u2019s hit a level where it\u2019s almost intolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Though some of Alex\u2019s co-workers know he is trans, his students do not. He considers himself \u201cstealth\u201d at work, which means he conceals his trans identity to fit in with cisnormative standards. (Because of this, Alex used a pseudonym in this piece.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThe big thing people don\u2019t recognize is that they most likely have interacted with a trans person without knowing,\u201d Alex said. \u201cI use the men\u2019s locker room at the gym every morning, and no one gets hurt or upset. That\u2019s the main feeling going through the community: fear.\u2019<\/span> Photograph: Javannah J Davis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Trevor Project, a non-profit focused on suicide prevention efforts for LGBTQ+ youth, <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/11\/election-lgbtq-youth-crisis-calls\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reported a 700% increase<\/a> in calls, texts and messages to its crisis hotline after election day. Youth experiencing thoughts of depression, self-harm and suicide are encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/get-help\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">contact<\/a> the organization \u2013 though, according to 19th News, there are \u201clong hold times at an especially vulnerable time for LGBTQ+ people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Corinne Goodwin, executive director of Eastern PA Trans Equity Project, wrote in an email that since the election, the non-profit had seen a 600% increase in calls to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patransequity.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">infoline<\/a> for people seeking resources and support. Attendance at peer-led support groups rose by 200%, and requests for assistance with gender or name change markers increased by 1,000%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The day after the election, Goodwin said, the group received a call from a transgender person who lives in a very rural part of Pennsylvania. The caller said that four of their neighbors had come to their house the night before, pounding on their front door and threatening to assault them for being transgender. The person called the police, who refused to investigate, citing no proof of an incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThis is an example of what many transgender people fear, that not only will their rights be reduced or taken away, but that the most reactionary elements in our society will feel emboldened to harm them,\u201d Goodwin wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/dec\/18\/trans-americans-upstate-new-york-rochester\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Rochester, New York<\/a>, Javannah J Davis leads Wave Women Inc, a non-profit supporting underserved Bipoc trans and gender non-conforming individuals. \u201cThe challenges are going to get worse before it gets better,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople are scared. That\u2019s the main feeling going through the community: fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Davis says her goal is to help as many trans people as possible navigate the serpentine process of legally changing their names before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Mike, a trans man in his 60s, leads support groups in Pennsylvania. \u201cPeople talk about moving to another country, but the reality is that\u2019s just not realistic,\u201d he said. (Mike used a pseudonym and did not want his exact age printed to prevent being identified by his employer.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Sparks, the 18-year-old, plans to move to a state that allows greater access to gender-affirming care. This year, South Carolina <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/29\/south-carolina-aclu-trans-healthcare\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">banned<\/a> access to care for trans youth, also prohibiting public funds such as Medicaid from being used to provide healthcare for transgender people of any age.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"614150fe-3ac5-4786-98f1-f4f7dd3ef3a4\" data-spacefinder-role=\"supporting\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"element  element--supporting element-supporting dcr-a2pvoh\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1pvqcrw\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Morgan Peterson: \u2018I\u2019m pretty determined to stay here and fight for people.\u2019<\/span> Photograph: Morgan Peterson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">South Dakota also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-politics-and-policy\/south-dakota-becomes-6th-state-restrict-gender-affirming-care-minors-rcna70592\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">restricts access<\/a> to gender-affirming care for trans youth. So, in some ways, the morning after the election was \u201cjust another day for them\u201d, says Morgan Peterson, a 25-year-old administrative assistant at Transformation Project, which serves trans people in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Peterson, who is non-binary, says many clients decided to move next door to Minnesota, a state with better healthcare options. \u201cFor me, I\u2019m not on hormones, and I\u2019m very fortunate, so I\u2019m pretty determined to stay here and fight for people,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Zaya Perysian, a 22-year-old content creator from Los Angeles, renewed her passport this week. She has no plans to leave the country and considers herself somewhat buffered by her state\u2019s blue status. But she wants to be prepared, just in case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cIt seems like we\u2019re in the early stages of something much darker for the future of this country when it pertains to minority communities,\u201d Perysian said. \u201cThe last time Trump won, we were like, \u2018It\u2019ll all be fine,\u2019 and it mostly was. But this time, it\u2019s different. There\u2019s something that feels so sinister behind it. A lot of us just want to be prepared because you never know what type of legislation they are going to try to pass to erase us from public society, or history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kendall, a 47-year-old from Pennsylvania, planned to marry her partner next summer. They imagined a big, fairytale wedding, maybe in Europe. But as the election approached, the couple, both trans women, decided they didn\u2019t want to take their chances. They feared a Trump presidency could signal the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/27\/same-sex-couples-anxiety-post-roe-landscape\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">end of marriage equality<\/a>. They eloped in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWe had a few people over to our apartment and did it,\u201d Kendall said. (She asked to use a pseudonym due to fears for her safety.) \u201cWe did it in our living room. People asked, \u2018Was it nice?\u2019 We tried to play it off like we wanted something intimate, but the real reason is we needed it to be legal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Now, Kendall wonders: \u201cGod knows how long we\u2019ll be allowed to be married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Shane Whiteside, who is 30 and lives in South Carolina, also hopes to make it legal with his fiancee before Trump\u2019s election. \u201cI told her, I know we didn\u2019t want to rush this, but I\u2019m absolutely terrified that if I don\u2019t get married to you right now, the state is not going to let me, because they\u2019ll take away same-sex marriage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"0811b6b3-9a9e-46d3-a1c4-d4ad803aa402\" data-spacefinder-role=\"supporting\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"element  element--supporting element-supporting dcr-a2pvoh\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1pvqcrw\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Zaya Perysian: \u2018I\u2019ve heard a lot of trans people say that after this election, it feels like our best days are behind us.\u2019<\/span> Photograph: Zaya Perysian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In the days after the election, some lawmakers and pundits <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/bigotry-is-not-the-answer-to-donald-trump.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">scapegoated transgender people<\/a> for Kamala Harris\u2019s loss. Such messaging echoes past retrograde thinking from John Kerry\u2019s failed 2004 bid: at the time, politicians on both sides <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/WNT\/story?id=230634&amp;page=1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">blamed the loss<\/a> on the senator\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna4245324\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">support for civil unions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The US representative Seth Moulton, a Democrat from Massachusetts, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/07\/us\/politics\/democrats-kamala-harris.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cDemocrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face. I have two little girls, I don\u2019t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I\u2019m supposed to be afraid to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Trans individuals are already more likely to experience <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/ncvs-trans-press-release\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">gender-based violence<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/poverty-journal\/blog\/anti-lgbtq-discrimination-and-barriers-to-accessing-public-benefits\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">poverty<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/endhomelessness.org\/trans-and-gender-non-conforming-homelessness\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">housing insecurity<\/a> than cis Americans. Comments like Moulton\u2019s add to the pain they feel as they prepare for a hostile administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cIt\u2019s really a bunch of bullshit coming from both sides when it pertains to trans people,\u201d said Perysian. \u201cWe\u2019re just exhausted. We\u2019re just trying to find our own American dream here, and unfortunately our future in this country has become less and less bright. I\u2019ve heard a lot of trans people say that after this election, it feels like our best days are behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Now, trans individuals cling to any shreds of hope they can find. Alex felt it when his co-workers hugged him the morning after Trump\u2019s win. Mike feels it at his trans support group. Kendall feels it when she watches old clips of Mr Rogers being a good neighbor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Sparks relates to a quote he saw on social media this week: \u201cFor every bigot, there\u2019s going to be an ally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cCommunity and trans people don\u2019t just go away,\u201d Sparks said. \u201cThey may take it out of schools and stuff, but it\u2019s not like we\u2019re going to disappear. We just won\u2019t have a word for what we\u2019re feeling because they won\u2019t teach it to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">For Perysian, though, \u201cIt\u2019s not about hope.
