During Trump\u2019s first term, Cheung served as director of strategic response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j2vnr900053b6mlmdd1rkz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a part of the same batch of appointments, the transition announced Trump ally Sergio Gor will also serve as assistant to the president, as well as the director of presidential personnel. CNN previously reported that Gor was tapped for the director of presidential personnel position.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j2wjj6000b3b6mjl3gcp5b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSteven Cheung and Sergio Gor have been trusted Advisors since my first Presidential Campaign in 2016, and have continued to champion America First principles throughout my First Term, all the way to our Historic Victory in 2024,\u201d Trump said in a statement. \u201cI am thrilled to have them join my White House as we, Make America Great Again!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j498wp000b3b5vx363ugfv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The position of White House communications director is separate from the role as White House press secretary, though people have served both roles simultaneously in the past. Trump has not yet announced a press secretary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j3qzmi00003b5vg9hpfduj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cheung has been long known as a pugilistic defender of Trump, but his role has primarily been behind the cameras. He is active on social media, though, where he remains a vociferous defender of his boss.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4r88r000q3b5vyc8boj0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He assumes a position that saw unusual turnover during Trump\u2019s first term. During that term, six different people held that title under seven different stints. None lasted more than a year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j3r5qq00023b5v2n56594o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthony Scaramucci infamously lasted in the post for only 11 days under Trump\u2019s first term. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/12\/politics\/anthony-scaramucci-donald-trump-reelection-cnntv\/index.html\">Both he<\/a> and another White House communications director, Stephanie Grisham, have since broken from their former boss.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j3zgd700053b5vkl61snje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prior to working on Trump\u2019s first campaign, Cheung was a spokesman for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The ties between the UFC and president-elect are strong; Trump frequently sits ringside at UFC fights, and UFC President and CEO Dana White is a longtime friend of Trump\u2019s who spoke at the Republican National Convention this summer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4hvec000h3b5vkt7nhmvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cheung handled Trump\u2019s communications during several newsworthy incidents during the campaign, including the aftermath of an alleged incident at Arlington National Cemetery, where an apparent confrontation between a cemetery worker and members of Trump\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/29\/politics\/us-army-rebukes-trump-campaign-arlington-incident\/index.html\">drew a rebuke<\/a> from the Army.
