The two were taking a victory lap, due to the show\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24122477\/fallout-tv-series-review-prime-video-show\"> critical success<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24124500\/fallout-season-2-release-date-cast-prime-tv-series\"> second season renewal<\/a>, but Spencer still took the opportunity to address the gaming side of things too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t have a new [Fallout] game lined up for the launch,\u201d Spencer said. \u201cI actually think that gave us some creative liberty that [we] wouldn\u2019t have had if we tried to coordinate production of two very different creative processes to land at the same time. The play is much more long term than trying to drive some gift buying.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">It\u2019s almost like the <em>Fallout<\/em> adaptation took Microsoft by surprise. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/mtg-magic-the-gathering\/467434\/marvel-mtg-universes-beyond-timing-release-date-price\">speaking to Polygon last month<\/a>, Wizards of the Coast\u2019s vice president of design Aaron Forsythe said the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24139124\/mtg-fallout-best-selling-commander-set-ever\"> overwhelming success<\/a> of the Fallout-themed <em>Magic: The Gathering<\/em> decks, released around the same time as the show\u2019s debut, was \u201cnot really planned, just amazingly fortuitous,\u201d suggesting a lack of communication with Bethesda or Xbox. We\u2019re told all the time executives rake in their exorbitant salaries because they specialize in this sort of high-level decision-making. But when did that come into play here, exactly?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">Fallout developer Bethesda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/7\/2\/21311535\/bethesda-game-studios-fallout-franchise-adaptation-amazon-prime-series\">teased the Amazon adaptation in 2020<\/a>. Microsoft finalized its acquisition of Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2021\/3\/9\/22321189\/microsoft-bethesda-acquisition-complete-xbox-windows-pc-exclusives-game-pass\"> a year later<\/a>. With all that time \u2014 not to mention Microsoft\u2019s immense operating capital \u2014 you\u2019re telling me Xbox couldn\u2019t come up with <em>something<\/em> to coincide with the show\u2019s premiere? Of course, Bethesda was busy with <em>Starfield<\/em>. But it\u2019s odd for Spencer not to acknowledge the missed opportunity, perhaps even offering some platitudes about the difficulties of re-releasing or remaking beloved titles like <em>Fallout 3<\/em> and <em>Fallout: New Vegas<\/em>. (In their current forms, those games aren\u2019t exactly friendly to non-gamers being introduced to the franchise for the first time, most of whom may not understand backwards compatibility or have the baseline knowledge to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24141738\/fallout-games-pc-difficult-in-2024-new-vegas-mods\">get them working on modern PCs<\/a>. Despite that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24131018\/fallout-games-steam-player-count-bethesda-tv-show\">tons of people flocked to those games<\/a> anyway after the show came out.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">Spencer reportedly closed out his comments by pointing to the existence of the massively multiplayer <em>Fallout 76<\/em> and <em>Fallout Shelter<\/em> on mobile as potential <em>Fallout<\/em> video games for folks coming off watching the television series. I\u2019d argue that, while both have their merits, neither are core <em>Fallout<\/em> experiences. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">Oh well.
