The update includes new commentary, quality-of-life features, Steam Workshop support, and more. However, perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of this big <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> celebration is a new two-hour documentary from Valve detailing the development of the famous first-person shooter and its follow-up episodes. And yes, they talk about<em> <\/em><span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 dPMosf sc-145m8ut-0 erKGZM js_link\" data-ga=\"[[&quot;Embedded Url&quot;,&quot;Internal link&quot;,&quot;https:\/\/kotaku.com\/15-years-ago-this-month-valve-announced-half-life-2-e-1846995929&quot;,{&quot;metric25&quot;:1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/15-years-ago-this-month-valve-announced-half-life-2-e-1846995929\"><em>Half-Life 2 Episode 3<\/em><\/a><\/span>, the game that never came to be despite millions of players begging Valve to make it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Here\u2019s the documentary if you haven\u2019t watched it yet: <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">At the end of the doc, after talking about <em>Episode<\/em>s<em> 1 <\/em>and <em>2<\/em>, numerous people who worked on <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> and its episodes then began talking about  <em>Episode 3<\/em>. <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 dPMosf sc-145m8ut-0 erKGZM js_link\" data-ga=\"[[&quot;Embedded Url&quot;,&quot;External link&quot;,&quot;https:\/\/youtu.be\/YCjNT9qGjh4?t=6817&quot;,{&quot;metric25&quot;:1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YCjNT9qGjh4?t=6817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valve was apparently working on an ice gun<\/a><\/span> that would let players create icy structures, pathways, and barricades during combat. Valve was also working on a blob-like monster that could split into multiple parts and go through vents and chain-link fences. However, this was all very early stuff, with <em>HL2 <\/em>engineer David Speyrer suggesting they were only about six months into development before plans changed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cEven into <em>Episode 3<\/em>, I still don\u2019t know what that would have been if we\u2019d built it because it hadn\u2019t been built,\u201d said series writer Marc Laidlaw. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201cThat was the the feeling of excitement. Of something I can\u2019t even imagine is going to happen with this team. I was not imposing a top-down, \u2018This is what we must do to tell our very important tale,\u2019 you know? It\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, we have new features, how do we use [them]? What kind of story can we do with these now?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">According to Speyrer,<em> Episode 3 <\/em>was set in the Arctic\u2014something that previously released concept art had confirmed\u2014and he explained that the episode would focus on the missing Borealis ship referenced in both the <em>Portal<\/em> and <em>Half-Life<\/em> franchises.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 dezcon\" id=\"h104752\"><em>Episode 3 <\/em>was stopped after six months of development<\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">After six months of development, Speyrer says that <em>Episode 3<\/em> was still a \u201ccollection of playable levels in no particular order\u201d and some story beats. He theorized that after another six months, they would have reached a \u201ccritical mass of mechanics\u201d and at that point they could start really putting the game together for release in about a year or two, depending on \u201chow ambitious\u201d the team got.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Of course, that didn\u2019t happen.<em>\u00a0<\/em>In the documentary, <em>Half-Life<\/em> 2 devs explain that they had started to run out of things to do with the tools and features they had developed. And then, they felt like they had waited too long to come back and finish it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">\u201c<em>Left 4 Dead<\/em> came out great,\u201d said Speyrer. \u201cBut it took long enough\u2014and this is  the tragic and almost comical thing about it\u2014was it took long enough that then, by the time we considered going back to Episode 3, the argument was made like, \u2018Well, we missed it. It\u2019s too late now, you know,\u2019 and \u2018We really need to make a new engine to continue the <em>Half-Life<\/em> series\u2019 and all that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Now, Valve feels like that was a mistake, with Speyrer adding: \u201cIn hindsight [it was] wrong.
