According to the city health department, a case of shigellosis was reported at La Escuela Fratney.<\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">Shigella bacteria can cause stomach pain, diarrhea and fever. A UW Health doctor told FOX6 News, while it can be difficult to contain, people should not panic. For young children who might be in diapers, it is really important to clean the area you changed a diaper in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fox6news.onelink.me\/MVy8?pid=Web&amp;c=new_in_article&amp;af_web_dp=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fox6now.com%2Fapps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX6 News app for iOS or Android.<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">In a statement, MPS said in part: &#8220;We are following procedures to treat this issue, and no other infections have been reported.&#8221; Meanwhile, parents said they\u2019ll be watching for warning signs.<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">&#8220;It does make me fearful,&#8221; said Areizaga. &#8220;My biggest concern would be how fast is this spreading.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">&#8220;It certainly concerns me. I don\u2019t want my child to get sick, but again, I trust their procedures and will keep an eye out on my child making sure he\u2019s doing OK,&#8221; Schuler said.<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">The Milwaukee Health department is providing guidance to affected individuals and recommending enhanced hygiene and cleaning measures. (Photo by DeAgostini\/Getty Images)<\/span> <!----><\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-92a2946a=\"\">What is shigellosis?<\/h2>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/shigella\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, Shigella bacteria cause an infection called shigellosis<i>.<\/i> Shigella causes an estimated 450,000 infections in the U.S. each year, and antimicrobial resistant infections result in an estimated $93 million in direct medical costs.<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">Shigellosis is contagious and can spread through contaminated food, water or contact with fecal material.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/disease\/shigellosis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: Shigellosis information from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">&#8220;That\u2019s the really bad thing about this bacteria. It is very contagious,&#8221; said Demuri.<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">Data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows 300-400 cases are reported in the state per year. Health care providers are required to report any cases within 72 hours.<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-92a2946a=\"\">Shigellosis symptoms<\/h2>\n<p> <!----><\/p>\n<p data-v-92a2946a=\"\">Symptoms usually start one or two days after infection and last seven days.
