attorney who represents two women who were witnesses in the House Ethics Committee probe into former congressman Matt Gaetz said Friday that one of his clients told the panel she saw the congressman having sex with a minor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jgfsi100063b6m7iya333z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy client testified to the House Ethics Committee that she witnessed Matt Gaetz having sex with a minor,\u201d said attorney Joel Leppard, whose clients sat for closed-door testimony before the committee as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/14\/politics\/gaetz-attorney-general-ethics-report-senate\/index.html\">now-dropped investigation<\/a> into the Florida Republican.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jil6s3000w3b6m9nf5mucs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The committee had been probing allegations that Gaetz may have \u201cengaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct.\u201d Gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, including ever having sex with a minor or paying for sex.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ji6dem00093b6mjqj1l8ln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked Friday about the testimony, first reported on by <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/exclusive-woman-told-house-ethics-panel-witnessed-gaetz\/story?id=115897603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a>, a spokesperson for Gaetz told CNN that \u201cMerrick Garland\u2019s DOJ cleared Matt Gaetz and didn\u2019t charge him.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jilwy800103b6m0wq5rzol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Department of Justice had separately pursued a yearslong sex-crimes investigation into Gaetz but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/13\/politics\/matt-gaetz-attorney-general\/index.html\">ultimately decided<\/a> last year not to pursue criminal charges against him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jimjof00143b6mvshupryc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The investigations have drawn renewed attention in recent days after President-elect Donald Trump earlier this week announced his intention to nominate Gaetz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/13\/politics\/matt-gaetz-attorney-general\/index.html\">to serve as attorney general<\/a> in his incoming administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jinazy00173b6mt37npi9j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If approved for the role by the Senate, Gaetz would take over DOJ, the nation\u2019s top law enforcement agency, and be in control of the investigative files that detail the evidence the FBI uncovered in the sex trafficking investigation against him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jip5y4001b3b6m1wfsb9w2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Justice Department deemed the files too sensitive to release even to the House Ethics Committee.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ji7gvw000b3b6m09plyky0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gaetz\u2019s resignation from Congress to prepare for the confirmation process effectively ended the congressional investigation, as the panel only has jurisdiction over a member when they are serving in Congress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jiyf4r001g3b6m7tajer6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats immediately began calling for the release of the committee\u2019s long-awaited findings \u2013 a call that Leppard echoed Friday, arguing that \u201cdemocracy demands transparency.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3jglatj00003b6mu2povrld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Late Thursday, Republicans canceled a scheduled Friday meeting with Democrats on the panel that was expected to address the report, sources told CNN.
