{"id":126530,"date":"2024-11-16T14:02:34","date_gmt":"2024-11-16T07:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=126530"},"modified":"2024-11-16T14:02:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-16T07:02:34","slug":"europes-hera-asteroid-probe-heads-for-mars-after-engine-burn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=126530","title":{"rendered":"Europe&#8217;s Hera asteroid probe heads for Mars after engine burn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The Hera asteroid probe has passed a critical milestone on its journey to study the site of the first asteroid deflection test.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\"><u>European Space Agency<\/u><\/a> (ESA) spacecraft fired its three orbital control thrusters for 13 minutes on Nov. 6, following a longer, 100-minute burn on Oct. 23, the agency <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Operations\/Hera_burns_towards_Mars\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Operations\/Hera_burns_towards_Mars\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">announced in a statement<\/a> on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>Together, the maneuvers have sped up Hera by 544 feet per second (166 meters per second), setting the spacecraft on course to rendezvous with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\"><u>Mars<\/u><\/a> in March 2025. It will use the Red Planet for a gravity assist, accelerating Hera towards its destination.<\/p>\n<p>The Hera mission is headed for the Didymos binary asteroid system. NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\"><u>Double Asteroid Redirect Mission<\/u><\/a> (DART) smashed into Didymos&#8217; smaller companion, Dimorphos, in September 2022 and Hera is due to make critical follow-up investigations to learn how efficient the asteroid deflection impact really was.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are now analyzing Hera&#8217;s new trajectory following the second burn,&#8221; Francesco Castellini from ESOC&#8217;s Flight Dynamics team, said in ESA&#8217;s statement. &#8220;It appears to have gone very well. We will execute a much smaller correction maneuver of a few tens of centimeters on Nov. 21 to fine-tune the trajectory for the upcoming Mars flyby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The flyby will also be an opportune moment for some bonus science.
