Trump, as Tehran attempted to ease rising tensions with Washington, according to U.S. officials, as well as an Iranian official and an analyst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The message, sent to Washington through an intermediary, came after a note from the Biden administration in September that warned that the United States would consider any Iranian attempt on the life of Mr. Trump, then the Republican candidate for president, to be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/15\/us\/politics\/trump-security-threats.html\" title=\"\">\u201can act of war.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since Mr. Trump won the Nov. 5 election, many Iranian former officials, pundits and media outlets have been publicly advocating <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/11\/world\/middleeast\/iran-trump-election-deal.html\" title=\"\">for Tehran to try to engage with the president-elect<\/a> and pursue a more conciliatory approach, despite vows from Mr. Trump\u2019s allies to renew a high-pressure campaign against Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">U.S. officials have said that Iran sought to kill Mr. Trump in revenge for ordering <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/11\/us\/politics\/iran-trump.html\" title=\"\">the 2020 drone strike that killed Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani,<\/a> the commander who directed Iran\u2019s militias and proxy forces.
