You want a collection of quotes to try and support your argument that I am any of those things? Go for it, man,\u201d the filmmaker and actress, 58, said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much material you can look through. But every time they do that, and I\u2019m also talking about strangers now, they absolutely prove my point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bateman\u2019s point is that, during the Biden administration and even before, America has been living under a \u201ccloud that has been pressing down on society.\u201d She\u2019s referring to, as she tweeted, the concept of mob rule on social media and how \u201cany questioning, any opinions, any likes or dislikes \u201d \u2014\u00a0be it about hot-button topics from Gaza to trans athletes in women\u2019s sports or any form of social justice \u2014 \u201cwere held up to a very limited list of \u2018permitted positions\u2019 in order to assess acceptability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMan, we just went \u20181984\u2019 on ourselves,\u201d she told The Post with an exasperated sigh. \u201cReporting the surveillance, surveilling each other. Come on. Why? Don\u2019t you want to relax? Do you always want to feel like you are testifying? Do you always want to feel like somebody is recording evidence that\u2019s going to be brought into a court of law? Why do you want to live like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bateman said she\u2019s taught kids Gianetta and Duke \u2014 her kids with husband Mark Fluent \u2014 to have sensible conversations about their opinions. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bateman \u2014 whose brother, \u201cOzark\u201d actor Jason Bateman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7UIZER9rMe8\">stumped for Kamala Harris<\/a> \u2014 was in Washington, DC, on the night of November 5 , watching as state by state flashed red.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised to feel, physically feel, a relief in my body,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize how uncomfortable the last four years had felt until I felt that balloon deflate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about one party or one person being the hero, she makes clear \u2014 but having the ability to speak your own thoughts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bateman is the older sister of Jason Bateman, and the two co-starred in an episode of his show \u201cArrested Development\u201d in 2006. <span class=\"credit\">20th Century Fox Licensing\/Merchandising \/ Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFirst time I felt a little air go out of that [so-called balloon] was when Elon Musk bought Twitter,\u201d Bateman added. \u201cAnd I\u2019m just saying how it felt. I\u2019m not saying what was the consequence of that or anything. I just felt it deflate a little bit. And then I felt it really deflate when Trump was elected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bateman was 16 when she came into American homes each week as Mallory Keaton on the popular sitcom \u201cFamily Ties.\u201d The show, which won five Emmys, centered on a pair of ex-hippie parents (Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross) raising their three kids \u2014 trendy Mallory, tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers) and Reaganomics-mad son Alex (Michael J. Fox) in the 1980s. But they were all able to express their thoughts without worrying about being treated harshly or excommunicated. Bateman said the irony is not lost on her, and she is eager for America to get back to that place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s room for everyone to feel exactly how they want to feel. After \u201cFamily Ties,\u201d she continued acting, with memorable roles in shows like \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d and \u201cArrested Development,\u201d alongside her brother, Jason, and movies like \u201cSatisfaction\u201d with Julia Roberts. She launched a clothing line and co-hosted the podcast \u201cWake Up and Get Real\u201d with her fashion publicist BFF Kelly Cutrone.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Bateman got a degree in computer science and digital media management from UCLA. She\u00a0is not into the \u201cwhole women versus men patriarchy,\u201d especially in the film business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not my jam,\u201d Bateman said. \u201cFor me, as far as helping other people in the business and stuff, that is a big component of the business. So for me, making sure it\u2019s somebody I can vouch for is far more important than which gender they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having been in Hollywood since she was a kid, she knows its liberal side \u2014\u00a0complete with Democrats like<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/10\/us-news\/george-clooney-calls-on-biden-to-drop-out-of-presidential-race-weeks-after-co-hosting-fundraiser-he-cannot-win\/\"> George Clooney<\/a>, who played a big part in kicking Joe Biden out of the presidential election \u2014 well and wishes politics didn\u2019t have such a big role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the entertainment business. I love everybody in the entertainment business. I don\u2019t care how they voted,\u201d she said. \u201cMy love for them and for this business and for the art of filmmaking is so beyond any election. That\u2019s not what\u2019s important. What\u2019s important to me is the art and judging people by their character, not by their color, not by their weight, not by their age, and not by who they voted for. But she will say one thing \u2014\u00a0voters are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/06\/opinion\/how-kamala-harris-killed-the-celebrity-endorsement\/\">tired of celebrity endorsements<\/a>, be it from Oprah Winfrey or Katy Perry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople really don\u2019t want to be told what to think,\u201d Bateman said.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, she doesn\u2019t see her own recent comments as political as much as simply human: \u201cPolitics is not interesting to me\u2026 it\u2019s more of a spiritual shift that I felt, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I\u2019m saying is that everybody should be free to live their lives \u2026 Over the last four years or more, there\u2019ve just been a lot of situations where you look around and you go, \u201cHuh, that person\u2019s been being strung up by their heels for questioning this. And that person over there is having their head chopped off because they questioned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Bateman said, the \u201cwoke era\u201d is over. \u201cI\u2019m not even presenting a conflicting opinion about a specific topic. I\u2019m saying right now, that era of not being able to question things is over \u2026 That woke police \u2014basically a version of Stasi police, emotionally, physically, socially \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way you can rip people down and ruin their careers, ruin them socially, all of that is if you have a mob mentality momentum.
