Putin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among those released by Russia were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/world\/europe\/russia-prisoner-swap-detainees.html\" title=\"\">four political prisoners and three people with ties<\/a> to the country\u2019s most prominent opposition figure, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/16\/world\/europe\/aleksei-navalny-dead.html\" title=\"\">Aleksei A. Navalny<\/a>, who died in prison in February. The deal seemed poised to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/06\/world\/europe\/russian-dissidents-opposition-movement.html\" title=\"\">breathe new life<\/a> into a fractured movement that had struggled to exert influence in the aftermath of Mr. Navalny\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But three months later, there are signs that the Russian opposition movement has never been more divided \u2014 or faced as steep a challenge in working to counteract Mr. Putin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Infighting and accusations among competing anti-Putin groups threaten not only its political and financial viability, but also the legacy that Mr. Navalny worked hard to leave behind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Sunday, legions of those opposed to the Kremlin\u2019s rule <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/navalnaya-admits-has-no-plan-ahead-of-russian-anti-war-berlin-march-de8a4934\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">are expected to march in Berlin<\/a> in the first big anti-Putin protests since the activists were released in August \u2014 a rally intended as a strong show of unity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/06\/us\/politics\/trump-wins-presidency.html\" title=\"\">election this month of Donald J. Trump<\/a> to a second term as the U.S. president has further complicated the effort. Mr. Trump in the past has expressed admiration for Mr. Putin and suggested that he would end American support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.
