Sales had plunged \u2014 leading to hundreds of store closings \u2014 as consumers continued buying from online retailers like Amazon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j8i36e00023b6mm63aflmq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Barnes &amp; Noble would revamp its business model. It began prioritizing customer preferences over promotions and catered to a community of readers who engage on social media.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvj000r3b6m8mxfdqok@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Daunt sets himself apart from his predecessors by describing himself as a bookseller instead of a retailer \u2014 a seemingly minor yet important distinction for the company\u2019s \u201cbooks first\u201d approach.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvj000s3b6mxd1fdu8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That meant leaving the decision on what books to stock and display to each individual store and abandoning the \u201cone-size-fits-all\u201d model.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvj000t3b6mbt4b5gi6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe problem with Barnes &amp; Noble when I took it over was that the bookstores themselves weren\u2019t very good,\u201d Daunt told CNN. \u201cI think a proper bookstore has to be curated, and that is the essence of one of the core skills of what it is to be a bookseller. You are trying to have the titles that you think will most interest your customers and display them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvj000u3b6mfx2gq86w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Daunt\u2019s strategy was a gamble. Not only was he relying on the judgment of each store\u2019s manager, he was also forgoing revenue large publishers pay for display spaces that promote new releases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk000v3b6mkvz8j5yj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the adoption of the indie bookstore model has paid off. Foot traffic data for Barnes &amp; Noble show that visits are up by 7% since 2019, according to location analytics company Placer.ai.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk000w3b6mq4e5hgzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re relaxed enough now as a retailer,\u201d said Daunt. \u201cIn the past, we\u2019d have probably tried to put a process around it so we had some agency in all of this from a central perspective. Whereas, in fact, the sensible thing to do is just have fun in each individual store.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk000x3b6m8i43gknm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Daunt said that Barnes &amp; Noble\u2019s model of relying on the judgment of individual booksellers has been met with considerable success \u2014 a completely different story from its competitor Amazon when it entered the retail book market with Amazon Books locations in 2015.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk000y3b6m6pa15a6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amazon Books adopted a \u201cratings-first\u201d approach by stocking books that sold well on its website, but it failed to entice customers and eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/02\/tech\/amazon-closing-bookstores\/index.html\">shuttered all locations in 2022<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00103b6med4657ka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Daunt credits part of Barnes &amp; Noble\u2019s recent success to BookTok, a TikTok subcommunity that emerged in 2020 when<strong> <\/strong>influencers introduced new finds and shared book recommendations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00113b6mdja17dnf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The hashtag #BookTok has over 40 million posts and continues to grow, and its influence  reaches beyond its digital space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00123b6mcmcum1ww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shannon DeVito, head of books at Barnes &amp; Noble, says that beyond reigniting a love for reading, the BookTok trend has guided stores on what to stock.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00133b6mtp6a5c90@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA lot of stores took advantage of the heyday of BookTok and created tables and specific displays of varying sizes because they had that flexibility, which is another beautiful thing about the stores really determining their own destiny,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00143b6mdj2t19y6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s also driving foot traffic to stores. Kendra Keeter-Gray, a BookTok content creator with over 100,000 followers, told CNN that she and her friends could spend anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours inside a Barnes &amp; Noble, usually in the BookTok section where they trade recommendations and flip through currently trending novels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00153b6mbleqgt1h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you go to Barnes, it\u2019s like an excursion almost. Noble has also tapped into BookTok\u2019s fandom by hosting community events, from midnight release parties to costume competitions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j4vpvk00173b6m6xkbplxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cStores are deciding to do events for their area where we\u2019re seeing turnouts of hundreds of people for book releases,\u201d DeVito said. \u201cIt\u2019s really pushed a level of excitement around book releases that frankly hasn\u2019t been here since Harry Potter.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3iwbsl900003b6mc96sldig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But more than that, the rebirth of Barnes &amp; Noble\u2019s stores confirms the company\u2019s belief that there remains a consumer appetite for physical books.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3j6odkw001f3b6mj6uejql2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like most bookstores, Barnes &amp;
