{"id":126963,"date":"2024-11-17T17:32:41","date_gmt":"2024-11-17T10:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=126963"},"modified":"2024-11-17T17:32:41","modified_gmt":"2024-11-17T10:32:41","slug":"moons-far-side-once-had-erupting-volcanoes-scientists-find","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=126963","title":{"rendered":"Moon&#8217;s far side once had erupting volcanoes, scientists find"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Volcanoes were erupting on the mysterious far side of the moon billions of years ago, US and Chinese researchers have found.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Analysis of samples collected by a Chinese mission found basalt (volcanic rock formed after an eruption) fragments dating back more than 4.2 billion years. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The findings were published in the <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-08382-0\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature<!-- --><\/a> and <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adt1093#abstract\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<!-- --><\/a> journals on Friday.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">While scientists already knew of volcanic activity on the near side of the moon, which we can see from Earth, the &#8220;dark side&#8221; is very different in its geology, and remains largely unexplored.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The rock and dust samples &#8211; the first to be retrieved from the far side of the Moon &#8211; were collected by the Chang\u2019e-6 spacecraft, following a nearly two-month long mission which was fraught with risks.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Led by experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researchers used radiometric dating to determine the age of the volcanic rock.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Their analysis also revealed a &#8220;surprisingly young&#8221; eruption occurred some 2.83 billion years ago, something which has not been found on the near side of the Moon.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;This is an incredibly exciting study&#8221;, Professor Qiuli Li from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics wrote in a detailed peer review.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;It is the first geochronology study to come from the Chang\u2019e-6 samples, and will be of immense importance to the lunar and planetary science community.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">While it is widely known as the &#8220;dark side&#8221;, this part of the Moon actually gets plenty of sunlight &#8211; we just don&#8217;t see it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This is because the Moon is tidally locked to Earth, and takes the same amount of time to orbit our planet &#8211; about 27 days &#8211; meaning the same side always faces us.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/moon.nasa.gov\/resources\/26\/first-photo-of-the-lunar-farside\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">first image of the far side<!-- --><\/a> was captured in 1959 by the Soviet spacecraft, Luna 3.
