The risk of contracting Clade I mpox in the U.S. remains low, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>A less severe variant known as Clade II continues to circulate in the U.S., including in <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-06-18\/mpox-is-on-the-rise-in-l-a-county-heres-how-to-avoid-it\">Los Angeles<\/a> and San Francisco \u2014 two of the epicenters of the last outbreak in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In Africa, a Clade I outbreak has been centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which had <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/multi-country-outbreak-of-mpox--external-situation-report-40--13-october-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6,169 confirmed cases<\/a> and 25 deaths as of Oct. 6, according to the World Health Organization. <\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, cases of Clade II mpox were <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-08-10\/monkeypox-cases-rising-exponentially-in-california-u-s\">rapidly increasing in cities<\/a> across the globe, particularly in the U.S. While that strain of mpox was rarely deadly, officials declared a worldwide <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news\/item\/23-07-2022-who-director-general-declares-the-ongoing-monkeypox-outbreak-a-public-health-event-of-international-concern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public health emergency<\/a> in July 2022. In the months that followed, the spread of the virus steadily fell, though cases have <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-06-18\/mpox-is-on-the-rise-in-l-a-county-heres-how-to-avoid-it\">never completely gone away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2024, the appearance of the more deadly Clade I variant once again prompted a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2024-08-14\/a-new-global-health-emergency-what-is-mpox-where-are-the-outbreaks-and-what-is-the-who-doing\">global health alert<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Recent evidence, however, suggests that this Clade I outbreak may be causing less severe illness than previous ones, especially when patients get quality medical care, the CDC said. In the past, the strain resulted in death rates of 3% to 11%, but the death rate for this outbreak appears to be closer to 1% with good medical care. <\/p>\n<p>Mpox belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox but causes milder symptoms such as fever, chills and body aches. <\/p>\n<p>The symptoms for both types of mpox are similar, with more severe cases causing a rash on the hands, feet, chest, face, mouth or genitals.
