<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj48000u3b6m4yosrurx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Max\u2019s six-part prequel series \u201cDune: Prophecy,\u201d premiering Sunday, the story will stretch far beyond the vast Spice-infused deserts of the planet Arrakis that Timothe\u00e9 Chalamet\u2019s character Paul Atreides walked in the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/10\/21\/entertainment\/dune-adaptations-history-lynch-villeneuve-cec\/index.html\">\u201cDune\u201d movies<\/a> directed by Denis Villeneuve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj48000v3b6m167rp2wj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cProphecy\u201d takes place in \u201ctotally different environments\u201d and time periods, according to executive producer Alison Schapker, who told CNN in a recent interview that the show expands the \u201cDune\u201d universe in a way that feels cohesive to both the Frank Herbert source material and the movies that came before it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj48000x3b6mhwcvbok8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c\u2018Dune\u2019 is a universe that people are attached to,\u201d said Schapker, whose previous credits include leading the charge on shows like \u201cWestworld,\u201d \u201cLost\u201d and \u201cAlias.\u201d \u201cIt exists in a world that matters to people and I think we wanted to respect that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj4800113b6mst2y78ak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schapker\u2019s team ultimately had \u201ctotal freedom\u201d when it came to setting up these new interstellar locales, but they worked hard to apply the same aesthetic standards set by the films so that it feels like the show \u201ccan exist in the universe that Denis so gorgeously put on the 1965 novel of the same name \u2013 and tells the origin story of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful group of women trained to harness special abilities of the mind and body.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3i28s5h002c3b6m8d8z8zzq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inspired by the \u201cSchools of Dune\u201d book trilogy written by Kevin J. Anderson and Frank Herbert\u2019s son Brian Herbert, \u201cProphecy\u201d follows sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen, who take on the \u201cforces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit,\u201d according to an official <a href=\"https:\/\/press.wbd.com\/us\/media-release\/hbo-0\/dune-prophecy\/hbo-original-drama-series-dune-prophecy-debuts-november-17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">synopsis<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3i2f5xy002g3b6myv563m2i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the worlds featured in the series is Salusa Secundus, seen in Villeneuve\u2019s films as a prison planet, but in \u201cProphecy\u201d it\u2019s presented as an imperial planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3i2ggng002n3b6mrttr38dn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The series will also showcase worlds like Wallach IX, where the sisterhood that Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams) oversee has its institutional base, and Lankiveil, an icy and forbidding planet where the Harkonnens were banished to during this period in the story\u2019s history.\n    <\/p>\n<div While there was an emphasis on making these worlds feel as \u201creal and gritty and epic\u201d as possible in a visual sense, it was also important to ground the sprawling story and rich lore through the show\u2019s characters to give \u201cDune\u201d newcomers an easy entry into the franchise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj4800143b6m13jqb3jc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat was a real conscious sort of tightrope walk we did,\u201d said Schapker, who asserts that you can still enjoy the series without having read the books or seen the films.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj4800153b6m76k68lqu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That said, \u201cProphecy\u201d serves more of an adult audience with some of its more intimate scenes. Being able to venture into this territory \u2013 without, of course, being gratuitous \u2013 was a joy for Schapker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hzxj4900173b6mq094c67m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI loved that we were allowed to be grown up sci-fi,\u201d Schapker said. \u201cIt really was very fun to allow our characters to have three dimensional humanity to them, including their sexuality, and that the show can allow people to go and depict the spicier moments.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3i34mll00003b5vukdjxxfk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spicier, in this case, should not be confused with the much-contested and coveted substance at the center of the \u201cDune\u201d lore.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hy22ft00003b6mcx7v2qse@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first episode of \u201cDune: Prophecy\u201d premieres Sunday on Max.
