The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 31 points, or 0.1%, as of 10:45 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.8% higher. <\/p>\n<p>CVS Health rallied 4.4% after <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cvs-health-board-expansion-glenview-c4a21b38886cdf085b6ef5b7404215db\">adding four new directors<\/a><\/span> to its board. The health giant did so following discussions with a major investor, hedge-fund owner Glenview Capital Management. Its CEO, Larry Robbins, is one of the new directors. <\/p>\n<p>Liberty Energy also helped pull the market upward after rising 2.9%. Trump named its CEO, Chris Wright, as his <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-2024-election-energy-secretary-d546f5f81d7b2347b49905be924dfcd7\">Secretary of Energy<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Trading of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spirit-airlines-bankruptcy-debt-losses-782c7fb892adf1d2f366411bab955668\">Spirit Airlines\u2019<\/a><\/span> stock, meanwhile, was halted after the budget carrier said it reached an agreement with its debtholders on a plan to take it through Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The airline will continue to fly while it restructures, but it will also likely wipe out the holdings of all its current stock investors. <\/p>\n<p>Stocks broadly gave back more than half their postelection gains at the end of last week, and the S&amp;P 500 fell Friday to its worst loss since before Election Day. Investors had sent the S&amp;P 500 nearly 4% higher in the days immediately following Trump\u2019s win. Bank stocks, smaller companies and other <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-regulation-taxes-tariffs-energy-retail-technology-cff11a24cf9a7e05a7b42b3e99a61768\">areas of the market seen as the biggest<\/a><\/span> winners from the president-elect\u2019s preference for <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-wins-second-term-policies-de3dcf0f173b42602b258042fd7aaafb\">lower tax rates, higher tariffs and lighter regulation<\/a><\/span> did particularly well. <\/p>\n<p>More recently, though, investors have braced for some of the potential downsides for the market of Trump\u2019s reshaping of the economy. Moderna rose 4.5% on Monday, but it is still down since Trump said he wanted Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/robert-f-kennedy-vaccines-trump-rfkjr-7f8dcb25de76a5a70710d22bbc63f6fa\">anti-vaccine activist<\/a><\/span>, to lead the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-rfk-hhs-health-kennedy-f40ee2398e3a280c1586eecdd80bdf7c\">Department of Health and Human Services<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Worries about <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-inflation-tariffs-taxes-immigration-federal-reserve-a18de763fcc01557258c7f33cab375ed\">potentially higher inflation<\/a><\/span> under Trump have also sent Treasury yields upward in the bond market. Such results could tie the Federal Reserve\u2019s hands, when the central bank is trying to lower interest rates to ease the brakes off the economy and keep the job market humming. <\/p>\n<p>While lower rates can give a boost to growth, they can also add fuel for inflation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraders appear to be gauging the potential impact of a new Trump administration\u2019s policies on the economy, and the possibility that the Fed may slow down its rate-cutting campaign,\u201d according to Chris Larkin, managing director, trading and investing, at E-Trade from Morgan Stanley.<\/p>\n<p>Higher rates and yields in turn mean more pressure on companies to make bigger profits in order to make their stock prices look less expensive. Their prices have already run up much faster than their earnings. <\/p>\n<p>Several big-name companies will be reporting their latest profit result this week, including market heavyweight Nvidia on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The chip company has grown into one of Wall Street\u2019s most influential, with a total market value of nearly $3.5 trillion, after becoming the poster child of the rush into artificial-intelligence technology. It will need to hit analysts\u2019 high expectations for growth during the latest quarter, if not more, to justify its big stock price. <\/p>\n<p>Other big companies set to report results this week include Lowe\u2019s and Walmart on Tuesday, Target on Wednesday and Deere on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>The big-box retailers will be reporting after an update on Friday said <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/retailers-spending-consumers-inflation-stores-shoppers-economy-d9373d589c5af93504920c5894753444\">shoppers spent more at U.S. retailers<\/a><\/span> generally last month than expected. It\u2019s the latest signal that the most influential force on the economy remains solid, but the data may not be quite as strong as it appeared. After taking away purchases of automobiles, sales at retailers were weaker last month than economists expected<\/p>\n<p>In the bond market, Treasury yields were holding steadier, which helped keep things calmer in the stock market.
