march. Wellington city council warned commuters to plan for hours-long travel delays as the march winds its way through the city\u2019s main streets towards parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/sep\/11\/who-is-nga-wai-hono-i-te-po-new-zealand-maori-queen\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">M\u0101ori Queen<\/a>, Nga wai hono i te po, was among those protesting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/m-ori\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">M\u0101ori<\/a> Queen is willing to help lead a conversation about nationhood and national unity but she will not accept a unilateral process that undermines [the treaty],\u201d her spokesperson, Ngira Simmons, said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The h\u012bkoi gathered in opposition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/07\/treaty-of-waitangi-new-zealand-founding-document-changes-bill\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Treaty Principles Bill<\/a>, which if passed into law, would radically alter the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/feb\/06\/new-zealands-treaty-of-waitangi-explained-in-30-seconds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Treaty of Waitangi<\/a> is interpreted. The treaty is an agreement signed in 1840 between more than 500 M\u0101ori chiefs and the crown and is instrumental in upholding M\u0101ori rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The bill does not have widespread support and is unlikely to become law. As the first group of marchers reached parliament, the crowd stretched around 2km through the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Earlier, tens of thousands had converged at the waterfront\u2019s Waitangi Park, ahead of the walk to parliament, colouring the skyline with the red, white and black of the tino rangatiratanga flag \u2013 the national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/m-ori\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">M\u0101ori<\/a> flag that has become a prominent symbol of M\u0101ori sovereignty. consulting on opening 7058 hectares of protected conservation land and marine reserves for mining.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of mining pristine parts of New Zealand caused upset across the country. href=\"https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/te-tiriti-o-waitangi-the-treaty-of-waitangi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">signed in 1840<\/a> by the British Crown and more than 500 M\u0101ori chiefs to establish a nation state. The treaty covers issues including land and cultural rights and M\u0101ori relations with ruling authorities. While not a legal document, some treaty principles have been developed and included in legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">There is an <a href=\"https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/politics\/treaty\/read-the-Treaty\/differences-between-the-texts\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">English and a M\u0101ori version<\/a> of the treaty. These documents contain fundamental differences that have long plagued the application of the treaty and how it is interpreted. To help address this, over the past 50 years, lawmakers, courts and the Waitangi Tribunal \u2013 an institution that investigates breaches of the treaty \u2013 have looked to the wider intention, or spirit, of the treaty, in order to define its principles.
