The other made Wyoming the only state to explicitly ban abortion pills, though other states have instituted de facto bans on the medication by broadly prohibiting abortion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nskhdn00063b5v0y5lmxew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The laws were challenged by four women, including two obstetricians, and two nonprofit organizations. One of the groups, Wellspring Health Access, opened in April 2023 as the state\u2019s first full-service abortion clinic in years following an arson attack in 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntib3k00023b5va9oa4vgb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a wonderful day for the citizens of Wyoming \u2014 and women everywhere who should have control over their own bodies,\u201d Wellspring Health Access President Julie Burkhart said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntjngc000a3b5vpuckcvms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            November\u2019s elections saw voters in Missouri clear the way to undo one of the nation\u2019s most restrictive abortion bans in a series of victories for abortion rights advocates. Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota, meanwhile, defeated similar constitutional amendments, leaving bans in place.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntjngc000b3b5v2mufw7ni@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Abortion rights amendments also passed in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland and Montana. Nevada voters also approved an amendment, but they\u2019ll need to pass it again it 2026 for it to take effect. Another measure that bans discrimination on the basis of \u201cpregnancy outcomes\u201d prevailed in New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntjngc000c3b5vzln6pxvb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The abortion landscape underwent a seismic shift in 2022 when the US Supreme Court overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, a ruling that ended a nationwide right to abortion and cleared the way for bans to take effect in most Republican-controlled states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntw024000m3b5v4q2nn2zl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thirteen states have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/abortion-access-restrictions-bans-us-dg\/index.html\">bans on abortion<\/a> at all stages of pregnancy, with limited exceptions, and four have bans that kick in around six weeks into pregnancy \u2014 often before women realize they\u2019re pregnant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nunhji000r3b5vvrdvaup6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nearly every ban has been challenged with a lawsuit. Courts have blocked enforcement of some restrictions, including bans throughout pregnancy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/03\/politics\/utah-judge-abortion-clinic\/index.html\">in Utah<\/a> and Wyoming. Judges struck down bans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/30\/politics\/georgia-abortion-ban\/index.html\">in Georgia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/12\/us\/north-dakota-judge-abortion-ban\/index.html\">North Dakota<\/a> in September. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/07\/politics\/georgia-abortion-supreme-court\/index.html\">Georgia\u2019s Supreme Court ruled<\/a> the next month that the state\u2019s ban can be enforced while it considers the case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nskhdn00073b5vdgogkdbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the Wyoming case, the women and nonprofits who challenged the laws argued that the bans stood to harm their health, well-being and livelihoods, claims disputed by attorneys for the state. They also argued the bans violated a 2012 state constitutional amendment saying competent Wyoming residents have a right to make their own health care decisions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntjluj00083b5vg7cxnuu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As she had done with previous rulings, Owens found merit in both arguments. The abortion bans \u201cwill undermine the integrity of the medical profession by hamstringing the ability of physicians to provide evidence-based medicine to their patients,\u201d Owens ruled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ntkk7m000f3b5vi1nj0ile@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The abortion laws impede the fundamental right of women to make health care decisions for an entire class of people \u2014 those who are pregnant \u2014 in violation of the 2012 constitutional amendment, Owens ruled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nskhdn00083b5vmeefhqaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wyoming voters approved that amendment amid fears of government overreach following approval of the federal Affordable Care Act and its initial requirements for people to have health insurance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nskhdn00093b5vm94viw1d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Attorneys for the state argued that health care, under the amendment, didn\u2019t include abortion. Republican Gov. Mark Gordon, who signed the abortion laws into effect in 2022 and 2023, did not immediately return an email Monday seeking comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nskhdn000a3b5vj324nwjo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both sides wanted Owens to rule on the lawsuit challenging the abortion bans rather than allow it to go to trial in the spring.
