All told, the U.S. has roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/news\/releases\/2024\/04\/release-opm-issues-final-rule-to-reinforce-and-clarify-protections-for-nonpartisan-career-civil-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.2 million federal workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After Trump&#8217;s election victory, <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/vivek-ramaswamy-trumps-sweeping-victory-what-it-means\/id1719657632?i=1000676240378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramaswamy told<\/a>\u00a0Tucker Carlson\u00a0that\u00a0he wanted to take a \u201cjackhammer and a chain saw\u201d to the federal government, starting by forcing civil servants to return to work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey don\u2019t go to work,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t even have to talk about you\u2019re in a mass firing, a mass exodus. Just tell them they have to come back five days a week from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ramaswamy\u00a0predicted\u00a0that would lead to a \u201c25% thinning out of the federal bureaucracy right there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jacqueline Simon, policy director for the American Federation of Government Employees, the union that represents more than 700,000 workers, said more than half of federal jobs don\u2019t qualify for working from home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She also argued that Ramaswamy and Musk\u2019s claims are exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis includes all the health care workers at VA hospitals and clinics and corrections officers at the Bureau of Prisons,&#8221; she told NBC News. &#8220;And Border Patrol agents and federal air marshals and people who inspect slaughterhouses and meat processing plants.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With fewer people in the office, the cost of excess federal office space has become a concern.\u00a0Last year, the Government Accountability Office concluded that 17 of the 24 largest federal agencies used on average only 25% of their office space.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__yAWZ0 styles_medium__OMa6x\"><picture class=\"styles_image__1qciH\" data-testid=\"picture\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2024-07\/240716-rnc-vivek-ramaswamy-mn-2100-d58f87.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-07\/240716-rnc-vivek-ramaswamy-mn-2100-d58f87.jpg 1x\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2024-07\/240716-rnc-vivek-ramaswamy-mn-2100-d58f87.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-07\/240716-rnc-vivek-ramaswamy-mn-2100-d58f87.jpg 1x\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-07\/240716-rnc-vivek-ramaswamy-mn-2100-d58f87.jpg\" alt=\"Former Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy \" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__Pe5JC\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on July 16. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Kamil Krzaczynski  \/ AFP &#8211; Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">For the Education Department, which is at the top of Musk and Ramaswamy\u2019s list for elimination, the use rate was even lower, at 16%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As of August, 98% of Education Department employees were eligible to work from home and more than half were working remotely, according to the OMB.\u00a0One of the agencies\u00a0with the lowest\u00a0office use rates,\u00a0only\u00a09%, was the federal government\u2019s human resources agency, the Office of Personnel Management.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Simon said allowing some workers to partially work from home helps the federal government recruit and retain a talented workforce that, despite lower pay, has to compete with the private sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In August 2023,\u00a0in a push to get civil servants back in the office, President Joe Biden required all federal workers to spend at least half of every two-week pay period in the office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ironically,\u00a0the federal government encouraged working from home long before the coronavirus pandemic. After the 9\/11 attack in 2001, President George W. Bush saw it as a way to ensure workers could stay online and work during emergencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmark\">In 2004, a little over 750,000 federal workers were eligible to work from home.
