{"id":127746,"date":"2024-11-19T19:27:28","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T12:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=127746"},"modified":"2024-11-19T19:27:28","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T12:27:28","slug":"inside-sonny-and-chers-secretly-dark-relationship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=127746","title":{"rendered":"Inside Sonny and Cher&#8217;s secretly dark relationship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Cher was so distraught over her \u201cloveless marriage\u201d to Sonny Bono that she contemplated throwing herself off the balcony of a Las Vegas hotel room \u2014\u00a0one of \u201cfive or six\u201d times she contemplated taking her own life during that period, she reveals in her new memoir.<\/p>\n<p>The icon was 26 years old and her weight had plunged to 98 pounds as she was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/18\/entertainment\/cher-claims-sonny-bono-isolated-her-from-peers-stole-money\/\">worked to the bone by her husband<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cher reached her tipping point in October 1972 while the couple \u2014 who found fame with their mega hit \u201cI Got You Babe\u201d in 1965 \u2014 was in Las Vegas performing two gigs a night in the Sahara Hotel\u2019s Congo Room.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Behind their smiles, Bono and Cher had a troubled marriage, as the singer reveals he was possessive and controlling. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She was already exhausted when she was told that Sonny signed a new contract for them to perform at Caesars Palace in Vegas \u201cevery summer for God knows how many years,\u201d Cher writes, even as they were still taping their hit CBS show, \u201cThe Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour\u201d and raising their young child.<\/p>\n<p>With the sudden realization that Sonny would always put \u201cbusiness first over me,\u201d she writes in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/r.pagesixlink.com?btn_ref=org-282f0dd399864b44&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FCher-Memoir-Part-One%2Fdp%2F006286310X%3Ftag%3Dpagesix-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fpagesix.com%2F2024%2F11%2F19%2Fentertainment%2Finside-sonny-and-chers-secretly-dark-relationship%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cher: The Memoir, Part One<\/a>,\u201d she was \u201cpissed off, frightened, and felt completely trapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The couple met when Cher was just 16 and Bono was 27 and already separated from his then-wife. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She recalls stepping barefoot onto the balcony of her hotel suite and staring down. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was dizzy with loneliness,\u201d she writes. \u201cI saw how easy it would be to step over the edge and simply disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a few crazy minutes I couldn\u2019t imagine any other option. I did this five or six times [during the Vegas stay], and each time I\u2019d think about [her child] Chas, about my mother, about my sister, about everybody and how things like this could make people who look up to me feel that it\u2019s a viable situation and I would step back inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The pair had a top-rated variety show on CBS, with big name guests like Farrah Fawcett. <span class=\"credit\">CBS via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, Cher recalls, one night between shows she \u201cwent out on the balcony again and this time I thought \u2018I don\u2019t have to jump off, I can just leave him.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a flirtation with a guitarist in her band that gave her the final push to leave Sonny, the man she met when she was just 16 and he was 27.<\/p>\n<p>That night she confronted her husband and told him, \u201cI want to sleep with Bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>They had their child Chastity \u2014 now known as Chaz \u2014 after Cher suffered a string of devastating miscarriages. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She didn\u2019t actually mean it, Cher writes, but Sonny \u2014\u00a0who she claims was so controlling that she was banned from wearing perfume \u2014 hadn\u2019t listened to her previous pleas to let her go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe silence was deafening. Then [Sonny] said, \u2018How long do you think you\u2019ll need?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hours,\u201d she responded. Sonny left, while Cher cried on Bill\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher with mother Georgia Holt in 1946 in Gardena, California. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Cher<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The next day she asked her husband for $500 to leave \u2014 and discovered he had already slept with Bill\u2019s girlfriend as revenge.<\/p>\n<p>She flew with Bill to San Francisco, followed by private detectives sent by Sonny, where they checked into a hotel and had \u201cunbelievable\u2019 sex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew then that I would never have sex with Sonny again,\u201d Cher writes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The singer and her sister, Georganne Bartylak. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Cher<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The two made a deal that she could live in their Malibu house on the weekends and, as she didn\u2019t have a bank account of her own, receive a $5,000-a-month stipend \u2014 but keep their split a secret while they continued to live together during the week and star on their hit show.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions softened within their mansion and, as the two became friends again, Sonny surprised her at breakfast one morning: \u201cYou know, after you went off with Bill that night at the Sahara, I seriously thought about throwing you off our balcony.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher with mother Georgia Holt and sister Georganne  Bartylak. Then I\u2019d get a book deal and my own show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cher laughed, too, as she admitted, \u201c\u2018Well, there would have been no need to push me because I was gonna jump!\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher with second husband, Gregg Allman, and their son, Elijah Blue Allman. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Cher<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWithin seconds we were howling \u2026 What else could we do but laugh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That could be the motto of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Cher was born to Jackie Jean Crouch, from rural Arkansas, and Johnnie Sarkisian, a grifter and heroin addict.<\/p>\n<p>Jackie Jean \u2014\u00a0who later changed her name to Georgia Holt \u2014 walked out on her husband after just three months of marriage, only to discover she was pregnant. Panicked, she nearly had a backstreet abortion, but walked out.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>It was music billionaire David Geffen who told girlfriend Cher that Sonny had failed to pay her. <span class=\"credit\">Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The couple was so broke that Cher was left in a Catholic children\u2019s home in Scranton, Penn., to be cared for by nuns while Sarkisian raised funds to get them to California.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Holt was banned from even holding her daughter and eventually got Cher out of the children\u2019s home with the help of a customer in the diner where she was working.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher went to Lucille Ball for marital advice \u2014\u00a0and the comedy legend got salty. <span class=\"credit\">NBCU Photo Bank\/NBCUniversal via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Meanwile, Tina Turner came to Cher for marriage advice amid her abusive relationship with Ike Turner. <span class=\"credit\">CBS via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne thing is for certain: my childhood was never normal,\u201d Cher writes.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother went on to marry eight times with six husbands, including twice to Sarkisian.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the future singer\u2019s childhood was spent living in poverty in Los Angeles, and Cher writes how her saddle shoes were held together with elastic bands and patched with cardboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher and Chaz Bono (center) wept at the funeral for Sonny Bono, alongside Bono\u2019s widow, Mary Bono. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the family was fame-adjacent as Holt played bit parts in \u201cGunsmoke\u201d and \u201cI Love Lucy\u201d and, Cher writes, lost a role in \u201cAsphalt Jungle\u201d to Marilyn Monroe. <\/p>\n<p>At 15, Cher romanced Warren Beatty, who was 25.\u00a0 A year later, she met Sonny \u2014\u00a0who was in the middle of a divorce \u2014 in a coffee shop and he let her move in with him in return for cooking and cleaning. He first told her: \u201cI don\u2019t find you particularly attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that changed soon enough. When a friend informed him Cher wasn\u2019t yet 18, she lied. \u201cOkay .. .I\u2019m not eighteen now, I\u2019m seventeen. But my birthday is in May, so I\u2019ll be eighteen in two months.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher on the cover of her album \u201cThe Prisoner\u201d in 1979. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was Sonny who convinced his boss, music producer Phil Spector, to let Cher sing with the Ronettes one day when Darlene Love\u2019s car broke down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From there, the duo started recording together, first as Caesar &amp; Cleo, then as Sonny &amp; Cher, and achieved huge fame with their TV show.<\/p>\n<p>Cher writes how they had their own private, non-legal wedding ceremony in their bathroom at home in 1963, weeks after she had suffered a miscarriage.<\/p>\n<p>By the time she was 21, Cher had suffered three miscarriages. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The first part of Cher\u2019s memoir is out now. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She also walked in on Sonny cheating with his assistant one night. He told her it was her fault for not having enough sex with him. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have had to look outside our marriage if I was sexually satisfied,\u201d he insisted. <\/p>\n<p>Cher writes: \u201cThat was such bullshit. but by the time he\u2019e finished. found myself apologizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They officially wed in 1964 when Cher became pregnant with Chas (who is trans and legally changed his name to Chaz in 2010).<\/p>\n<p>She writes that fame changed Sonny, who established the \u201cBenevolent Army of El Primo\u201d in which everyone in his orbit was issued a rank. The couple stopped going to dinners, concerts and movies, and Sonny was so jealous that he burned her tennis clothes in the backyard.<\/p>\n<p>But it was only after they split up and she started dating music boss David Geffen that Cher discovered the true extent of Sonny\u2019s duplicity.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cher performed at the Victoria\u2019s Secret Fashion Show in October. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Geffen read Cher\u2019s contract and discovered she was working for Sonny as an underpaid employee of a company called Cher Enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d worked my whole life, yet apparently, I had nothing to show for it. I\u2019d never for a second imagined that I needed to protect myself from Sonny, of all people, yet the contracts he\u2019d had me sign were secretly designed to strip me of my income and the rights to my own career,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, I\u2019ve racked my brain for how he could have done what he did, and I still can\u2019t get over it to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The icon in a creation by her favorite designer, Bob Mackie, in 1978. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She called Lucille Ball \u2014\u00a0who ha famously left Desi Arnaz \u2014 for advice.
