Yesterday, we reported on the backlash across social media \u2014 with most of the criticism aimed squarely at The Game Awards host and organiser Geoff Keighley.<\/p>\n<p>We thought the whole thing would die down overnight, but negativity&#8217;s still out in full force. Case in point: Kinda Funny Games&#8217; <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gameovergreggy\/status\/1858570701760065669?s=46&amp;t=plSLoquwH5O7sKxxZOZuQA\">Greg Miller<\/a> dared to speak out on the nomination, arguing that DLC <em>is<\/em> a game, and &#8220;if it&#8217;s that good, it should be honoured&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The obvious counterargument here \u2014 that <em>many<\/em> onlookers have made \u2014 is that it should probably be honoured in its own DLC category, instead of taking up a spot on the big Game of the Year list.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the poll we&#8217;ve been hosting at the bottom of this very article has received over 1,000 votes at the time of writing. We ask if DLC should <em>ever<\/em> be nominated for Game of the Year, and the vast majority of readers \u2014 a whopping 83% \u2014 have replied with &#8220;no, of course not&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Add that to the aforementioned social media backlash, and it&#8217;s becoming abundantly clear that most gamers don&#8217;t agree with the nomination on a fundamental level. Granted, we&#8217;re not expecting Shadow of the Erdtree to actually win the ultimate award at Geoff&#8217;s December shindig, but it&#8217;s still going to go down as one of the most controversial picks in the event&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Original Story:<\/strong> In case you missed it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/elden_ring\">Elden Ring<\/a> expansion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/elden_ring_shadow_of_the_erdtree\">Shadow of the Erdtree<\/a> has been officially nominated for Game of the Year at next month&#8217;s The Game Awards 2024. And guess what? The DLC&#8217;s inclusion has sparked a substantial backlash across social media, Reddit, and even the comments sections of sites just like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/\"><strong>Push Square<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Game Awards host and organiser Geoff Keighley is taking the criticism face-on via X, where he&#8217;s asking people for their thoughts on the nominees and what the &#8220;biggest surprise&#8221; is. Suspicions were raised over the weekend, when an update to The Game Awards&#8217; official website revealed that DLC can indeed be nominated for Game of the Year. The timing of this update <em>immediately<\/em> led to concerns regarding the whole process.<\/p>\n<p>Lo and behold, just days after the update, Shadow of the Erdree is nominated for the ultimate prize \u2014 as if Geoff and the gang had anticipated the potential backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it should be noted that this particular Game of the Year award is decided by critics. And, according to The Game Awards&#8217; website, DLC has <em>always<\/em> been eligible for Game of the Year \u2014 <em>if<\/em> it garners enough support from said critics.<\/p>\n<p>So, it&#8217;s assumed that Shadow of the Erdtree is simply that well-regarded by gaming publications; its quality apparently warrants a place alongside the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/astro_bot\">Astro Bot<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/final_fantasy_vii_rebirth\">Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/black_myth_wukong\">Black Myth: Wukong<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/metaphor_refantazio\">Metaphor: ReFantazio<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/balatro\">Balatro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, the expansion commands a thoroughly impressive score of 94 on Metacritic \u2014 but many would argue that&#8217;s not the point (ourselves included, for what it&#8217;s worth).<\/p>\n<p><!-- cache: html:pushsquare.com\/ssl\/related-articles:174605,174575 @ 2024-11-19T12:44:08+00:00 --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"block object-related\">\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>But what do you make of all this?
