(John Woodcock\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not only can these insects <a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/355\/6327\/833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">learn from each other<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-the-first-tool-and-non-plant-weapon-used-by-honeybees-poo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use tools<\/a>, but they can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-can-now-add-bees-to-the-list-of-animals-that-can-count-to-zero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">count to zero<\/a> and perform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bees-can-do-simple-arithmetic-says-new-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">basic mathematical equations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The question is, how would a tiny seed-sized calculator turn its problem-solving skills to something as complex as removing a cap from a soda bottle?<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Clearly, von Frisch&#8217;s bias for large brains is still with us today. While the zoologist <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s13592-020-00794-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admitted<\/a> bees could &#8220;accomplish astonishing intellectual feats&#8221;, he claimed they did so only through instinct, failing &#8220;when suddenly faced with unfamiliar tasks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Unscrewing the cap of a sugary drink is hardly a job bees evolved to tackle in nature, so von Frisch would be skeptical. It&#8217;s possible the bees just got lucky this time, detecting a sweet reward that drove them to wander somewhat blindly against a slight resistance.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, nature could yet surprise us. In the packed bee brain, for instance, a single nerve cell can sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2017-04-04\/how-do-tiny-little-bee-brains-do-so-much\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact up to 100,000 other cells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is amazing. <\/p>\n<p>I forget where I read it, but I recently saw the question posed &#8220;can cells make decisions and change their minds&#8221;. To score, the insects needed to copy each others&#8217; movements and learn from their mistakes, which they were able to do with startling ease.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such &#8216;tool use&#8217; at one time was ascribed to humans alone, but then to primates, next to marine mammals, and later to birds,&#8221; researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/355\/6327\/833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now we recognize that many species have the capacity to envision how a particular object might be used to achieve an end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Even with their small circuitry of neurons, bees may well be capable of far more than we once thought.
