The deal is \u201cintended to help enable Jersey Mike\u2019s to accelerate its expansion across and beyond the U.S. market,\u201d the companies said, as well as aid ongoing technological investments.<\/p>\n<p>Blackstone and Jersey Mike\u2019s did not immediately disclose financial terms in their Tuesday announcement. But a source familiar with the matter confirmed to The Associated Press that the transaction would value Jersey Mike\u2019s at around $8 billion, a figure <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/retail\/jersey-mikes-considers-sale-6acc1e8a?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously reported<\/a><\/span> by The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition of the private company is expected to close in early 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. Under terms of the agreement, Jersey Mike\u2019s founder and CEO Peter Cancro will continue to lead the business and maintains a \u201csignificant equity stake\u201d in the chain, the companies said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe we are still in the early innings of Jersey Mike\u2019s growth story and that Blackstone is the right partner to help us reach even greater heights,\u201d Cancro said in a prepared statement \u2014 adding that Blackstone \u201chas helped drive the success of some of the most iconic franchise businesses globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sports-business-new-jersey-wrestling-basketball-27e62148c2cd05fa8332bb2acbfa0f14\">Jersey Mike\u2019s<\/a><\/span> roots date back to 1956, with a Point Pleasant, New Jersey storefront location that was originally called Mike\u2019s Subs. In 1975, Cancro, then a 17-year-old high school senior who had worked there since he was 14, bought the operation with the help of his football coach.<\/p>\n<p>The chain has expanded rapidly over the last decade, more than tripling its locations from 857 stores in 2014, to more than 2,800 this year, according to Technomic, a restaurant consulting company. <\/p>\n<p>Jersey Mike\u2019s posted sales of $3.3 billion in 2023, up 25% from the prior year, according to Technomic. It\u2019s the 30th largest chain in the U.S. based on annual sales. <\/p>\n<p>Its aggressive growth has helped Jersey Mike\u2019s take market share from rivals like <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-america-5785c29ea51943d82fc297c4df5e0b52\">Subway<\/a><\/span>, which has been struggling with a glut of aging stores. Last year, Subway was <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/subway-roark-capital-sandwich-chain-66ce052f6b12469fc9264defbad2c75d\">acquired by Roark Capital<\/a><\/span>, a private equity firm with expertise in restaurant management. Roark also owns Inspire Brands, which houses two other Jersey Mike\u2019s rivals: Jimmy John\u2019s and Arby\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s agreement with Jersey Mike\u2019s follows a series of similar investments from Blackstone.
