People can currently get Apple TV+ from a <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/05\/comcasts-streamsaver-plan-is-15-month-if-you-like-cable-bundles-and-ads\/\">Comcast streaming bundle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And as of last month people can subscribe to and view <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/10\/amazon-apple-make-a-deal-to-offer-apple-tv-in-a-prime-bundle\/\">Apple TV+ through Amazon Prime Video<\/a>. As my colleague Samuel Axon explained in October, this contradicts Apple\u2019s long-standing approach to streaming \u201cbecause Apple has long held ambitions of doing exactly what Amazon is doing here: establishing itself as the central library, viewing, search, and payment hub for a variety of subscription offerings.\u201d But without support from Netflix, \u201cApple&#8217;s attempt to make the TV app a universal hub of content has been continually stymied,\u201d Axon noted.<\/p>\n<h2>Something has got to give<\/h2>\n<p>With the broader streaming industry dealing with high production costs, disappointed <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/10\/subscribers-are-paying-more-for-streaming-content-that-they-are-enjoying-less\/\">subscribers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/08\/chick-fil-a-cooking-up-new-family-friendly-video-streaming-service\/\">growing competition<\/a>, Apple, like many stakeholders, is looking for new approaches to entertainment. For Apple, that also reportedly includes <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/09\/report-apple-changes-film-strategy-will-rarely-do-wide-theatrical-releases\/\">fewer theatrical releases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It may also one day mean joining what some streaming subscribers see as the dark side of streaming: advertisements. Apple TV+ currently remains ad-free, but there are suspicions that this could change, with Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/07\/27\/apple-tv-plots-uk-adverts\/\">reportedly<\/a> meeting with the United Kingdom\u2019s TV ratings body recently about ad tracking and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-hired-nbcu-tv-exec-video-ad-ambitions-2024-3?r=US&amp;IR=T\">hiring of ad executives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s ad-free platform and comparatively low subscription prices are some of the biggest draws for Apple TV+ subscribers, however, which would make changes to either benefit controversial.<\/p>\n<p>But after five years on the market and a reported $20 billion in spending, Apple can&#8217;t be happy with 0.3 percent of available streaming viewership.
