Russia subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/russia-vladimir-putin-ramps-up-nuclear-threats-signal-us-ukraine-nato-missiles-joe-biden\/\">lowered its threshold for using nuclear weapons<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and, based on current polls, the likely next chancellor, has said he would be willing to provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles. <\/p>\n<p>Scholz paved the way for an early election earlier this month by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-coalition-government-collapse-olaf-scholz-finance-minister-christian-lindner\/\">sacking his former finance minister, Christian Lindner<\/a>. Since then, he has depicted himself as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/olaf-scholz-germany-reelection-ukraine-war-russia-europe-eu-bid-policy\/\">safe choice<\/a> for  chancellor in an effort to approve his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bild.de\/politik\/inland\/die-haelfte-aller-spd-waehler-hat-ihn-abgeschrieben-der-scholz-absturz-673b636a25f5c12fe9b135ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismal approval ratings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the Social Democratic Party (SPD), many are debating whether the SPD defense minister, Boris Pistorius, would be the better pick for party\u2019s chancellor candidate.
