However, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/495GM4k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mac mini<\/a> is a full computer, Microsoft\u2019s alternative runs exclusively in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-979084\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-microsoft-now-has-a-mac-mini-competitor-sort-of\">Microsoft now has a Mac mini competitor \u2013 sort of<\/h2>\n<p>The device was announced at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3YiB2OvK6sY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft Ignite 2024<\/a>, a conference focused on developers and IT professionals. From the outside, it kind of looks like the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/495GM4k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest Mac mini<\/a>, at least in terms of size. It\u2019s a small black box with a few ports on the back. However, both computers differ significantly on the inside.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being almost as small as an Apple TV, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/495GM4k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mac mini<\/a> is a proper computer powered by the M4 or M4 Pro chips. Windows 365 Link, on the other hand, has very light specifications. That\u2019s because the device streams Windows through the cloud instead of running a local operating system.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft sees Windows 365 Link as an ideal device for corporate customers. Rather than spending on large, expensive hardware, the idea is to have a super-small, much cheaper device that is connected to the internet to stream Windows with the power of a much better computer. Essentially, a computer for running cloud virtual machines.<\/p>\n<p>There aren\u2019t many details about the technical specifications. All we know so far is that the internal hardware has 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and an undisclosed Intel processor. Again, the specifications don\u2019t matter much, as the built-in hardware is only used to stream what\u2019s in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, the Windows 365 Link has a USB-C port along with two USB-A ports, DisplayPort, HDMI, and Ethernet. It\u2019s also equipped with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>As explained by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/11\/19\/24299789\/microsoft-windows-365-link-device-cloud-pc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Verge<\/a><\/em>, Microsoft believes that the new device brings security benefits to IT consumers, as all data is encrypted in the cloud and there\u2019s nothing stored offline that can be stolen or hacked. Of course, this also means that the PC becomes useless when there\u2019s no internet connection.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Introducing Windows 365 Link \u2013 the simple, secure, purpose-built device for Windows 365\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vXS8VhtosGI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Windows 365 Link will be available next year, and it will cost $349. It also requires a Windows 365 subscription, which starts at $28 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Although the idea sounds interesting, it\u2019s hard not to compare it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/495GM4k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mac mini<\/a>, which costs only $250 more but has much better hardware (and runs a local operating system).
