The case could go to the judge for a decision later in the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Phillips, her husband John, and Riley\u2019s father, Jason Riley, have sat through hours of agonizing testimony and evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The suspect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/14\/politics\/bill-clinton-laken-riley-campaign\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:an undocumented migrant from Venezuela;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">an undocumented migrant from Venezuela<\/a>, has shown little emotion throughout the trial. A few yards away, Riley\u2019s mother has openly wept numerous times \u2013 including when an officer testified about missed calls between Riley and her mother the morning Riley died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">These are some of the most intense revelations from the trial so far:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Surveillance video captures Riley\u2019s final jog<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Riley, a former cross-country runner, was last seen alive jogging near the University of Georgia\u2019s Oconee Forest Park the morning of February 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">She was a student at UGA until spring 2023, before switching to Augusta University\u2019s College of Nursing in the same city of Athens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">UGA surveillance video shows Riley jogging with her phone in her left hand \u2013 a device that would play a key role in the trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Phillips sobbed as she watched footage of her daughter the day she died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Hours after Riley left for her run, the surveiilance footage shows two of her roommates and their dog searching for their missing friend near a trailhead. They leave about 20 minutes later, with Riley nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Riley fought her attacker, prosecution says<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Forensic evidence shows Riley \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/15\/us\/laken-riley-murder-trial\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fought for her life;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">fought for her life<\/a>\u201d and \u201cfought for her dignity,\u201d before she died, the prosecution said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Genetic testing of fingernail clippings from Riley revealed a link to the genetic profile of Ibarra, Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab scientist Ashley Hinkle testified Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">For someone to get another person\u2019s DNA under their fingernails, it generally \u201ceither has to have some sort of scratching or contact with the inside of the nail,\u201d Hinkle said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In separate testimony Monday, UGA police Sgt. Joshua Epps said he encountered Ibarra the day after Riley\u2019s killing and noticed what \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/live-updates-laken-riley-murder-trial#cm3n2migh0000356m7drjg893?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:looked like fingernail scratches;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">looked like fingernail scratches<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cWhile speaking to him, I noticed on his right arm, his bicep, there was a scratch,\u201d Epps said. \u201cOn his left arm, he had a forearm scratch that was very similar \u2013 which in my mind, looked like fingernail scratches to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cI also noticed on his left wrist, just below the palm, he had a puncture \u2013 maybe half an inch wide \u2013 that, through my experiences playing sports in high school, and receiving the same injury from fingernails in football, I could see, like, wet flesh, like almost like it was fresh,\u201d Epps said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t very old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">As Epps described the injuries he saw on Ibarra\u2019s arms, Riley\u2019s mother cried and wiped away tears.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Missed texts and frantic calls<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Perhaps the most poignant testimony came Tuesday when UGA police Sgt. Sophie Raboud recounted Riley\u2019s last communications on her cell phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Minutes before her death, Riley called and texted her mother to see if she wanted to catch up. The missed call would be the last time Riley reached out to a loved one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Phillips sobbed in court as she listened to the police sergeant, who also sounded emotional when describing the following timeline:<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>8:55 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley sent her final text to her mother: \u201cGood morning,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAbout to go for a run if you\u2019re free to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:03 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley called her mother, but she did not answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:11 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley called 911.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:12 a.m.:<\/strong> The 911 operator called Riley back twice within one minute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:24 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter back, but Riley didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:37 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s mother texted her daughter: \u201cCall me when you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:51 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:53 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>9:58 a.m.: <\/strong>Riley\u2019s mother texted her daughter: \u201cYou\u2019re making me nervous not answering while you\u2019re out running. Are you OK?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>11:04 a.m.: <\/strong>Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>11:12 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>11:15 a.m.: <\/strong>Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>11:19 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s sister tried to call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>11:47 a.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s mother texted her daughter: \u201cPlease call me, I\u2019m worried sick about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>12:07 p.m.: <\/strong>Riley\u2019s mother called her daughter again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><strong>12:20 p.m.:<\/strong> Riley\u2019s stepfather tried to call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/live-updates-laken-riley-murder-trial#cm3nf0g5w00003b6mvvg6mz1h?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:12:38 p.m., police found Riley\u2019s body;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">12:38 p.m., police found Riley\u2019s body<\/a> in a wooded area near Lake Herrick.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Medical examiner says Riley was asphyxiated and had blunt-force head trauma<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Riley\u2019s father, mother and stepfather left the courtroom before a medical examiner testified about their daughter\u2019s injuries and cause of death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The 22-year-old died from the combined effects of blunt-force head trauma and asphyxia, said Dr. Michelle DiMarco, an associate medical examiner with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Asphyxia relates to a lack of oxygen and can be caused by hanging, manual strangulation or physical compression.
