Long Lake, authorities said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np00043b6mgyhi8f8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investigators were skeptical of Smith\u2019s story from the start, and eventually, under questioning, she confessed to rolling her car into the lake, killing her sons. Her attorneys argued she was suicidal and depressed and intended to stay in the car with her children.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np00063b6mvnx4wk6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Smith was convicted of murder. Now 53, she has served 30 years of her life sentence, making her eligible for parole under state law at the time of her trial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np00083b6mm0604vm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, Smith will have her chance to make her argument before the parole board, according to the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Thomas, did not respond to a request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np000d3b6m4doi88av@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Smith\u2019s three decades in prison haven\u2019t been uneventful. She has faced a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/public.doc.state.sc.us\/scdc-public\/inmateDetails.do?id=%2000221487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> internal disciplinary charges<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np000e3b6mp0utlwip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just months before her scheduled parole hearing, on August 16, Smith was charged with \u201ccommunicating with a victim and\/or witness\u201d through telephone calls with a documentary filmmaker, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3olwqkm0000356mg87l6kfx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inmates in South Carolina are allowed to receive and send letters but cannot legally communicate with journalists in person or on the phone. CNN has sent a letter to Smith in prison seeking comment \u2013 but has not received a response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nakrwh00003b6m7q3k79f7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Smith and the filmmaker discussed shooting the documentary after the parole hearing and how she would be paid for her participation, according to an incident report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3nd3z56000d3b6mnzt7zlf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey also discussed in depth the crime and the events leading up to and after it actually took place,\u201d the report states. \u201cIncluding such details as to what was in the trunk of the car when it went into the water and her plans to jump from a bridge while holding the boys but one woke up.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np000f3b6m3xv0gf45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The department said Smith agreed to provide the filmmaker with contact information for friends, family and her former husband, David Smith. Money was then placed in her prison account, the department said. He said he has been in touch with Smith\u2019s ex-husband \u2013 the children\u2019s father \u2013 who will also attend the hearing to oppose the parole. \u201cHe just wants to make sure Michael and Alex are not forgotten,\u201d Pope said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np000o3b6m5bw3w0f0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2004, David Smith told Larry King on CNN that he believed his ex-wife deserved the death penalty. CNN has not received a response to efforts to contact David Smith, but he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courttv.com\/news\/exclusive-susan-smiths-ex-forgives-but-wants-her-to-stay-in-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke to Court TV<\/a> last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3n8v3np000q3b6m0idm4oep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He said he had forgiven Susan Smith but wanted justice to be served.
