stillbirth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Oropouche virus, nicknamed &#8216;sloth fever&#8217;, caused alarm earlier this year after it spread outside of its usual South American range to\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/spain\/index.html\" id=\"mol-fd63b530-595f-11ef-958c-a765034a3bec\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/italy\/index.html\" id=\"mol-fd616b40-595f-11ef-958c-a765034a3bec\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a>\u00a0and the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The virus \u2014 named after the animal it was initially spotted in \u2014 has no vaccine or specific treatment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is known to cause\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">a headache, muscle aches, stiff joints, nausea, chills, sensitivity to light and vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">However, it can quickly cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the central nervous system, where it can cause meningitis and, in extreme cases, kill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">It is mostly spread by biting insects but there is limited evidence it can pass through<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/30\/12\/24-1470_article#suggestedcitation\"> sex<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Until now, experts northeastern Brazilian state of\u00a0Cear\u00e1, where a 40-year-old woman who at 30 weeks pregnant was infected with the oropouche virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The unnamed woman developed fever, chills, muscle aches, and a severe headache in July this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Just three days later she started to experience light vaginal bleeding as well as dark discharge from the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Her symptoms would continue for the next nine days and while signs initially suggested the foetus was fine subsequent scans confirmed that her baby had died during this period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Molecular testing of samples taken from her confirmed she had been infected with the oropouche virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Tests of the stillborn child, a boy, found no developmental disorders but analysis revealed the presence of the virus in his brain, spinal fluid, lungs, liver, umbilical cord as well as the placenta.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Writing in the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMc2412812\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>, the authors said: &#8216;These findings emphasise the risks of oropouche virus infection in pregnancy and the need to consider this infection in pregnant women with fever or other suggestive symptoms who live in or visit regions in which the virus is endemic or emerging.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It comes just months after over a dozen cases of\u00a0oropouche virus were detected <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"class\" &#8216;sloth fever&#8217;, oropouche isn&#8217;t spread directly by the animals themselves but instead by small biting insects like midges that can carry the disease from the sloths to other animals, including people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Oropouche symptoms typically start four to eight days after being bitten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although potentially deadly, the fatal outcomes are extremely rare and recovery from the disease is common. In most cases symptoms subside within four days of onset.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Oropouche&#8217;s exact impact on pregnancy is still being studied by experts.
