Rowling<\/a> first <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/jk-rowling-transphobic-tweets-controversy-1234627081\/\">went public<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/biz\/news\/j-k-rowling-trans-issues-sexual-assault-survivor-1234630367\/\">June 2020<\/a> about her belief that transgender women are men and transgender men are women, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/emma-watson-daniel-radcliffe-sarah-paulson-condemn-jk-rowling-anti-trans-tweets-1234630870\/\">many of the stars<\/a> of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/harry-potter\/\" id=\"auto-tag_harry-potter\" data-tag=\"harry-potter\">Harry Potter<\/a>\u201d and \u201cFantastic Beasts\u201d movies \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/global\/daniel-radcliffe-jk-rowling-anti-trans-makes-me-really-sad-1235988334\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Radcliffe<\/a>, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/eddie-redmayne-jk-rowling-anti-trans-tweets-harry-potter-fantastic-beasts-1234630226\/\">Eddie Redmayne<\/a> \u2014\u00a0immediately spoke out in support of trans and nonbinary rights and identity. Two of the biggest Harry Potter fan communities, MuggleNet and The Leaky Cauldron, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/harry-potter-jk-rowling-mugglenet-leaky-cauldron-anti-trans-1234697127\/\">denounced Rowling\u2019s views<\/a> and severed ties with the author\u2019s future projects. And Warner Bros. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/jk-rowling-warner-bros-1234631061\/\">released a carefully worded statement<\/a> that \u201ca diverse and inclusive culture has never been more important to our company and to our audiences around the world\u201d \u2014\u00a0which, while not mentioning Rowling or trans and nonbinary people, did at least put some rhetorical distance between the studio and the creative force behind one of its most enduring and lucrative franchises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFour years later, the landscape looks quite different. Under new leadership, Warner Bros. Discovery has <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/harry-potter-franchise-future-tv-series-video-games-1236201249\/\">aggressively expanded the reach of Rowling\u2019s Wizarding World<\/a>, centered on HBO\u2019s impending revival of Rowling\u2019s book series as a longform TV show, led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, both alums of \u201cSuccession.\u201d HBO chief Casey Bloys told reporters at a press event on Nov. 12 that Rowling was \u201cvery, very involved in the process selecting the writer and the director,\u201d and her anti-trans statements \u201chaven\u2019t affected the casting or hiring of writers or productions staff\u201d for the show. And a spokesperson for the network said in a statement to <em>Variety<\/em> that its parent company has \u201cbeen working with J.K. Rowling and in the Harry Potter business for over 20 years\u201d and \u201cher contribution has been invaluable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter \u2014 the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cJ.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.\u201d (A rep for Mylod referred <em>Variety<\/em> to HBO; a rep for Gardiner did not respond to a request for comment.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRowling, meanwhile, has made her campaign against trans identity the central focus of her online persona. On Sept. 10, she <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1833583137324208324\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> the U.K. open casting call for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley to her 14.2 million followers on X. That was an exception: Over the next two months, Rowling posted or reposted more than 200 times (excluding replies) about trans-related issues to support her conviction, as she <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1843275717682856268\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> on Oct. 7, that gender identity \u201cis defined by little more than a person\u2019s subjective feelings, or (more accurately) their claim to feel those feelings.\u201d Within the same time frame, she posted or reposted about Harry Potter just eight more times, including one in which <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1855674089395851699\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she said<\/a> she \u201cpulled something laughing\u201d at a fan expressing their \u201cimmeasurable\u201d disappointment that Rowling was, in her words, \u201cvery involved\u201d with the \u201cPotter\u201d series. (Through a spokesperson, Rowling declined to comment for this story.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe industry has never quite faced a scenario in which the sole creator of a beloved, multibillion-dollar global franchise has plunged so unabashedly into one of the culture\u2019s most contentious social issues. She\u2019s effectively made herself toxic to many within the core fandom, whose devotion began 25 years ago when they were children and has sustained the franchise long after the books and the film series concluded. It\u2019s placed those fans in a vexing dilemma: How can they engage with the new show, or any other iteration of the franchise, if they vehemently disagree with Rowling\u2019s views on gender identity?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMelissa Anelli, author of \u201cHarry, a History\u201d and webmistress of The Leaky Cauldron, notes that the site hasn\u2019t updated its popular podcast PotterCast since March 2023. \u201cEvery time we sit down to have a fun conversation about Harry Potter, the conversation becomes angry and depressing, and so we end up not publishing,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s made it less pure and exciting and fun the way it used to be. All of that now has this layer of, \u2018Right, but the person at the center of it all believes a certain faction of the population isn\u2019t real.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe fandom of 10 years ago was like a utopia,\u201d says Kat Miller, creative director of MuggleNet and coauthor of \u201cThe Unofficial Harry Potter Companion.\u201d The emphasis in the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d books and films on ideals of equality and inclusivity attracted a core fanbase \u2014 which Miller describes as \u201cmajority women, and very, very, very queer\u201d \u2014 who were unified in their passion for a story that had reached a rousing and deeply satisfying conclusion. Today, Miller says, the fanbase \u201cdefinitely has fractured, and I think that is mostly because of her. There are just too many political things that are interfering with the enthusiasm being at 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRowling\u2019s views have indeed invoked sharp words of support as well as dissent; while Radcliffe has <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/daniel-radcliffe-against-jk-rowling-anti-trans-beliefs-1235420177\/\">continued<\/a> to express how \u201cdeeply sad\u201d the author\u2019s comments on trans issues have made him, \u201cPotter\u201d stars <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/global\/ralph-fiennes-defends-j-k-rowling-harry-potter-1235413498\/\">Ralph Fiennes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/helena-bonham-carter-good-on-young-men-for-finding-middle-aged-beauty-sexy-5smkzmnm3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helena Bonham Carter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/tv\/news\/jk-rowling-mocks-harry-potter-tv-series-boycott-jim-broadbent-defends-actor-1235593907\/\">Jim Broadbent<\/a> have spoken out in her defense, and replies to her on X are filled with words of encouragement. For her part, Rowling has affirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/digital\/news\/jk-rowling-podcast-transgender-legacy-ill-be-dead-1235526478\/\">that she\u2019s unconcerned<\/a> about her gender activism <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1854854517293998488\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affecting her legacy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1778124467027267804\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in April<\/a>, she made clear that she would not forgive any creative collaborators who have spoken out in opposition to her beliefs: \u201cCelebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women\u2019s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces.\u201d (Even this week, Rowling demonstrated her resolve, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/digital\/global\/jk-rowling-john-oliver-spouts-bullshit-trans-athletes-womens-sports-1236214151\/\">rebuking<\/a> John Oliver \u2014 whom she met when he volunteered for her children\u2019s charity, Lumos \u2014\u00a0for speaking on his HBO series \u201cLast Week Tonight\u201d in support of trans kids playing sports, which the author called \u201cabsolute bullshit.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor any actor joining the new \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series, Rowling has thrown down a gauntlet they\u2019re unlikely to escape once casting for the show begins in earnest next year \u2014 just as the incoming Trump administration will likely start implementing plans to roll back protections for trans youth and health care. \u201cYou can\u2019t fault somebody for wanting to do the job. But the internet and the fandom and the politics of it all are probably going to demand that they say <em>something<\/em>,\u201d Miller says. \u201cIf you don\u2019t, people are going to automatically assume that you agree with Rowling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile some Potter fans have advocated for a boycott of the new series \u2014 which Rowling <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/tv\/news\/jk-rowling-mocks-harry-potter-tv-series-boycott-jim-broadbent-defends-actor-1235593907\/\">mocked<\/a> in 2023 \u2014 Anelli has grown dubious about how effective it could be. \u201cThere\u2019s the argument that support increases [Rowling\u2019s] influence,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t know how much more she can have. Money is sort of theoretical to her. It\u2019s in the stratosphere of what does a raindrop do to a thunderstorm?\u201d Four years of fan outcry and shunning of her work, Anelli says, \u201chas not affected the bottom line at all\u201d within the vast Potter industry of book sales, video games, theme parks, toys and other ancillary revenue streams. At this point, she sees total disengagement to be self-defeating: \u201cIf everybody who objects just leaves the floor, we\u2019re leaving [Rowling] with a microphone all alone and no ability to influence that dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat prospect is what prompted Tylor Starr, Potter fandom expert and co-author of \u201cThe Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook,\u201d to take a private, informal survey of roughly 250 \u201cdeeply engaged Harry Potter fans\u201d on their feelings about Rowling and the franchise. One of his findings, he says, is that 79% of cisgender respondents felt conflicted about buying a new Potter-related product. That led Starr to start exploring ways for fans to \u201coffset\u201d the purchase of Potter material. \u201cIf you buy a new wand, can you donate a portion of that to a transgender charity?\u201d he says. \u201cThere are so many fans who deeply disagree with what Rowling is saying, but still want to engage in the Harry Potter fandom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIronically, while Rowling\u2019s actions have undermined many Potter fans\u2019 dedication to her, they also appear to have strengthened those fans\u2019 solidarity with each other. \u201cAbandoning the fandom and shutting it down is not the place we wanted to be,\u201d Miller says. \u201cWe see the value in the community that the fans created.
