Liposuction followed closely behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cMen are becoming more aware and much more in tune with wellness and their physical appearance,\u201d <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.drshermak.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dr. Michele Shermak;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Dr. Michele Shermak<\/a>, a Baltimore-based plastic surgeon, tells Yahoo Life. \u201cThere&#8217;s a big awareness of plastic surgery and less of a stigma about it. And men are kind of the last frontier of stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">But while she theorizes that men are getting \u201con board\u201d with surgical cosmetic procedures, it\u2019s still curious that breast reductions are among the most popular, as both the data and anecdotal evidence from surgeons suggest.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"what-is-gynecomastia\"><strong>What is gynecomastia?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Both men and women have glandular tissue in their chests. For men, it is typically more involute than for women, says Shermak, meaning that it doesn\u2019t contribute to breast growth. However, that is not always the case. In fact, 50% of people assigned male at birth will be affected by gynecomastia at some point in their lives, <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/16227-enlarged-male-breast-tissue-gynecomastia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the Cleveland Clinic;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">according to the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.drjacobson.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dr. Joshua Jacobson;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Dr. Joshua Jacobson<\/a> of Jacobson Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, Calif., tells Yahoo Life that he\u2019s not only seen an increase in patients seeking gynecomastia removal surgery in his practice, but he has undergone the procedure himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cIt runs in some families and can be genetic or due to endocrine disorders, medications such as testosterone, spironolactone, some antacids and some HIV medications, just to name a few. Also, <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2860825\/#:~:text=Adolescents%20who%20use%20anabolic%20steroids,rarely%20is%20surgical%20intervention%20required.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:cannabis and alcohol;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">cannabis and alcohol<\/a> have been associated with it,\u201d says Jacobson. \u201cSome tumors, like from testicular cancer, can also have this effect, due to increased estrogen production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Natural hormonal changes and weight fluctuations also play a role. In any case, the condition can cause excess skin, in addition to fat and tissue. Most importantly, it\u2019s not harmful to physical health.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"how-is-it-removed\"><strong>How is it removed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The specific procedure depends on the extent of a person\u2019s gynecomastia and the type of tissue in the breast. Most often, it requires a small incision around the areola for the tissue to be cut out. \u201cThat is usually paired with liposuction of the chest,\u201d says Shermak. \u201cWith that type of surgery, it&#8217;s really small scars, barely visible, but really impressive results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">More severe procedures are required for excess skin. \u201cA bigger need for more skin removal tends to require some bigger incisions and scars,\u201d she says. The type of gynecomastia a person has, and therefore the surgery they\u2019ll need, are<a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430812\/#:~:text=Gynecomastia%20is%20classified%20into%20three,Marked%20enlargement%20with%20extra%20skin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:graded from one to three;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> graded from one to three<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/24022-gynecomastia-surgery#:~:text=What%20happens%20after,longer%20need%20them.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cleveland Clinic;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a> reports that aftercare usually consists of wearing a supportive garment around the chest to reduce swelling and taking medication for pain, swelling and for lowering the risk of infection. In some cases, tubes are temporarily placed under the skin to drain fluid and blood during the healing process.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"why-are-so-many-men-getting-the-surgery\"><strong>Why are so many men getting the surgery?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The number of gynecomastia surgeries performed each year indicates how common the condition is. However, a general rise in male plastic surgery and in conversations about <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mens-body-image-issues-pandemic-affected-mental-health-11660067380\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:body image among men;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">body image among men<\/a> appear to be the chief reason for the 23,831 gynecomastia surgeries for men recorded for 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cMen are more in the mix of having surgical procedures done. They\u2019re seeing it <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:10;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1036439\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:on social media;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:10;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">on social media<\/a> and are open to more information just as participants in social media,\u201d says Shermak. \u201cAnd the whole wellness, physical exercise space is huge for men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Boys, in particular, are becoming more <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/starvemaxxing-is-a-dangerous-body-image-trend-appealing-to-young-men-online-experts-caution-against-constant-comparison-on-social-media-001918208.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:exposed to unrealistic body standards;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\">exposed to unrealistic body standards<\/a>, which is influencing their body image. Shermak says that teenagers who come to her feeling self-conscious about asymmetrical breasts or full chests make up a good proportion of her cases. \u201cI had one young man who came in presenting [gynecomastia], and it really was impacting his body image. &#8230; And he&#8217;d been on some antidepressants,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen he came to see me a year later, he was off almost every single medication and had lost weight on his own. He just looks like a different person. And I say a big part of this difference is more his just confidence and the way he presents himself. He&#8217;s now a lot more comfortable with who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Communities of men with gynecomastia on social media illustrate that phenomenon. A <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gynecomastia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:subreddit;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">subreddit<\/a> dedicated to questions and discussions about the condition sees active members of all ages sharing their experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cI developed grade 2 gyno [shorthand for gynecomastia] when I was 12. I hated how it looked and got bullied a ton for it, mostly in locker rooms. Twenty years later, I am comfortable in my own skin. But I hit a point in training (weightlifting and running) where the thought that I can\u2019t improve on something because it is outside of my control put me over the edge,\u201d <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:13;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gynecomastia\/comments\/1gr9wvg\/today_is_the_day_of_my_surgery_i_dont_think_there\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one user wrote;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:13;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">one user wrote<\/a>. \u201cI remember promising myself when I was 14 that once I will make enough money, I will do it. Well, today is the day. I am so stressed though, hope the day goes OK and that the results won\u2019t cause another insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cI&#8217;m 1 hour out of surgery, wildly sore, but already mentally, I feel incredible,\u201d <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:14;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gynecomastia\/comments\/1gqbtr0\/completely_unnecessary_postop_post\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wrote another;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:14;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">wrote another<\/a>. \u201cThis sub[reddit] has helped me tremendously in making this decision for myself. I&#8217;m 36M, I&#8217;ve had gyno since high school, and for the last 20 years have put off surgery for every reason under the sun, until this summer, when I realized on a deep, deep level that it was either get the surgery, or live with it for the rest of my life. It&#8217;s not like we get a second chance at this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Trends like the \u201c<a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:15;pos:1\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/how-to-live-like-a-ballerina-according-to-professional-dancers-and-stylish-celebrities-194526884.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:ballet body;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:15;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\">ballet body<\/a>\u201d and the rise of weight loss medications promote the ideal of aesthetic, proportion and athletic physiques in women and men, according to the ASPS report. So as <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:16;pos:1\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/breast-reduction-increase-180316513.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:breast reductions rise in women;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:16;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\">breast reductions rise in women<\/a>, the organization suggests that the subsequent rise among men makes sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cMen wanted to feel confident in clothing, [including] fitted shirts that accentuated the contours of their chest. Also, they likely wanted to be at ease with their chests when not wearing a top either at the beach in a swimsuit or in a game of shirts against skins,\u201d states the ASPS report. \u201cOther favored procedures for both men and women toned and tightened their cores by getting rid of stubborn fat or sagging skin that diet and exercise couldn\u2019t target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Shermak says that weight loss accounts for a subsection of the group getting gynecomastia-removal surgery. \u201cWeight loss is again part of the whole wellness movement. And so there&#8217;s a group of people who can do their CrossFit and can do their weight loss, but they&#8217;re still left with something that might need a little surgical management to kind of get them over the hump,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Changing attitudes about weight and weight loss also contribute to the rise, according to Jacobson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cIn the past, people would blame the individual for being overweight and therefore make them believe the only answer is diet and exercise. But as plastic surgeons have been showcasing gynecomastia surgeries, bringing more awareness of it and displaying before\/afters, the general public has become more aware of it and has realized it can be present even in skinny individuals \u2014 and in a lot of cases the only way to treat it is surgery,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:17;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/cosmetic-procedures\/gynecomastia-surgery\/cost\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:average cost of gynecomastia surgery;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:17;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">average cost of gynecomastia surgery<\/a> is $5,587, according to the ASPS, which is lower than that of aesthetic breast reductions in female patients, at <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:18;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/reconstructive-procedures\/breast-reduction\/costs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:$7,800;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:18;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">$7,800<\/a>. Both numbers exclude the cost of anesthesia, operating room facilities and other related expenses, which are typically not covered by insurance.
