So why shouldn\u2019t federal employees who are paid with taxpayer dollars be required to be in office?\u201d the source said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000e3b6m4srtmya6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The thinking is this kind of mandate, coupled with moving agencies out of Washington, DC, would cause many federal workers to voluntarily leave, helping the new Trump administration thin out the federal workforce ranks and save the government money.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000f3b6mopp0e68b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ending remote work across government is being considered a potential \u201cearly candidate\u201d for executive orders that members of DOGE will recommend to Trump, the source said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely on the table,\u201d the source said, though it\u2019s unclear how much they believe this will save the federal government.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000g3b6m8zxfob4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, following the publication of this story, Musk and Ramaswamy published<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/musk-and-ramaswamy-the-doge-plan-to-reform-government-supreme-court-guidance-end-executive-power-grab-fa51c020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal<\/a> that outlined their plans to reform the government and took aim at remote work. \u201cRequiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don\u2019t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn\u2019t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home,\u201d they wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qd090g00013b6mm5elrset@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Currently, not all federal workers are required to be in the office five days a week. Each agency determines its remote policy to best complete its mission. There are 1.3 million federal workers approved for telework, according to data from the Office of Personnel Management. Government data shows teleworking federal workers spend 60% of their time performing work in person.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000h3b6mwxh4lrcy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe implication that federal employees writ large are not working in-person is simply not backed up by data and reality,\u201d Everett Kelley, national president for the American Federation of Government Employees, a union that represents more than 800,000 federal workers, told CNN in a statement. \u201cWhen it comes to changes in working conditions that could impact union contracts, AFGE takes the position that such changes must be negotiated with the union through the normal collective bargaining process.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000i3b6mg5gyxr0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sources also told CNN that conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk \u2013 who has grown close with Musk \u2013 is expected to serve as an unofficial adviser to DOGE. Kirk has taken aim at remote work, calling it <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/charliekirk11\/status\/1858524650336367000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cone giant looting operation and US taxpayers are their mask\u201d<\/a> on X on Monday, another sign this could be<strong> <\/strong>a key early priority.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000k3b6mprkz1n3e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some federal employees who have been allowed to work fully remotely say that forcing them to come back to the office would upend their lives \u2013 and not necessarily save the government as much money as one might expect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000l3b6m5cbjrg09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI can\u2019t abandon this career,\u201d one Library of Congress worker who lives in the Midwest told CNN. \u201cI would be forced to move back to Washington, DC, even if it means separating my family.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000m3b6mgsr8eprp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The worker, who requested anonymity to protect their job, had reported to their office in Washington, DC, five days a week for many years. But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the employee was allowed to work remotely and moved to the Midwest to be closer to family and save money \u2013 even though it meant taking a $12,000 pay cut. They have since bought a home and entered into a relationship.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000n3b6maj54zq81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adding to the complications, the worker doesn\u2019t have an office to return to since others within the Library of Congress have already moved into their former space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000o3b6mv58zct04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But some of their colleagues, particularly those with children, have said they wouldn\u2019t be able to move back. That would hurt the Library of Congress\u2019 mission since it, like many other government agencies, is already dealing with high turnover, the worker said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000p3b6m59w447us@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another federal employee who works remotely told CNN that they would have to commute two to three hours to the nearest office. That would be a deal-breaker for the worker, who has been with the federal government for more than 10 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000q3b6msgwk7fud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe stress would be through the roof,\u201d said the employee, who requested anonymity to protect their job. \u201cI am at the point where if I had to commute, I would resign. I would take this as a sign to move on and start a new chapter in my life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000r3b6m981auke9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The worker, who is employed by the General Services Administration, said that forcing them to come to an office would make them less productive. Currently, they work more hours \u2013 including when they are sick or scheduled to be off \u2013 even though they don\u2019t receive overtime pay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000t3b6mhcjmjo1f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Remote work isn\u2019t the only cost-cutting measure that is likely to be addressed through executive orders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000u3b6mh9nrhggk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The source familiar with early discussions on DOGE<em> <\/em>said that very early on in the administration, there are expected to be several other executive orders that have the fingerprints of DOGE and are aimed at cutting costs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000v3b6mmr6cgi70@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But DOGE recommendations aren\u2019t likely to solely take the form of executive orders, which can easily be overturned under future administrations, the source said. \u201cThere will also be a longer-term plan for more and deeper reductions through the rulemaking process,\u201d the source added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000w3b6mab7ug7nj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ramaswamy recently took to social media to note plans for cutting funds for programs Congress no longer authorizes but that still receive appropriations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3p0gz1o000x3b6mnxdqhpsh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t let the government spend money on programs that have expired. Yet that\u2019s exactly what happens today: half a *trillion* dollars of taxpayer funds ($516 B+) goes each year to programs which Congress has allowed to expire. There are 1,200+ programs that are no longer authorized but still receive appropriations.
