Mr. Adani discussed the scheme with officials in person, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Adani Green Energy then tried to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024-181\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">raise money from U.S.<\/a> and international investors with a 2021 bond offering on the basis of false and misleading statements about the firm\u2019s anti-corruption and anti-bribery efforts, the U.S. attorney\u2019s office said in the indictment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAs alleged, the defendants orchestrated an elaborate scheme to bribe Indian government officials to secure contracts worth billions of dollars,\u201d Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the district, said in a statement. Mr. Adani and his associates \u201clied about the bribery scheme as they sought to raise capital from U.S. and international investors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a parallel civil case saying Adani Green Energy raised more than $175 million from U.S. investors. One of Mr. Adani\u2019s associates was charged with conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits companies that operate in the United States from bribing foreign officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other executives at Mr. Adani\u2019s energy company who were charged Wednesday included Sagar R. Adani, Mr. Adani\u2019s nephew, and Vneet S. Jaain.
