Warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An inspection of a Tom\u2019s of Maine manufacturing facility last spring found \u201csignificant violations\u201d including the presence of a \u201cblack mold-like substance,\u201d and an internal investigation found bacteria in the water used to make the brand\u2019s popular toothpaste, federal regulators said this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations\/warning-letters\/colgate-palmolivetoms-maine-inc-687043-11052024\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">warning letter<\/a> dated Nov. 5 to the parent company Colgate-Palmolive reporting that microorganisms were found in water samples and finished toothpaste products during the inspection at a facility in Sanford, Maine, between May 7 and 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The letter, which accused the company of failing \u201cto follow appropriate written procedures,\u201d was not a formal recall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Donald W. Schaffner, a professor of food and science at Rutgers University, said in an email that the bacteria found might cause illness, particularly for those who are immunocompromised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf customers read about this issue and they have concerns,\u201d he said, \u201cI think throwing out their toothpaste is a reasonable choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa was recovered in multiple water samples that the company took from June 2021 to October 2022, according to the letter. It can cause <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pseudomonas-aeruginosa\/about\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">infections<\/a> in the blood, lungs and other parts of the body after surgery, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That water was used to produce a batch of Tom\u2019s Simply White Clean Mint Paste and to rinse down several pieces of equipment, the letter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The bacteria Ralstonia insidiosa was also found in its water, according to the F.D.A.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another bacteria, Paracoccus yeei, was found in a batch of the company\u2019s Wicked Cool! Anticavity Toothpaste, which is marketed toward children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.colgatepalmolive.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/colgate-completes-purchase-toms-maine#:~:text=Colgate%2DPalmolive%20Company%20(NYSE%3A,Maine%20for%20approximately%20%24100%20million.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> on Wednesday, Tom\u2019s of Maine said: We\u2019re working with the F.D.A. and are remedying the issues raised in their May inspection of the Tom\u2019s toothpaste manufacturing plant in Sanford, Maine.
