A four-day sentencing hearing is scheduled to open February 4 in Albemarle County Circuit Court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j5000a356mkgtmt80j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prosecutors read a summary in court Wednesday of what they allege happened the day of the shooting, including chilling details not publicly released before.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000b356mn3i6v3il@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While riding on the bus in the hours before the shooting, Jones texted an adult mentor he had known for several years and stated, \u201ctonight I\u2019m either going to hell or jail. I\u2019m sorry,\u201d according to the summary. The Associated Press obtained a draft copy of the summary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000c356mprlhzthq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jones had been scheduled to stand trial in January on charges including aggravated murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole in Virginia. The first-degree murder charges he pleaded guilty to in a plea agreement with prosecutors carry a sentence of 20 years to life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000d356m837do0mz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Authorities said Jones opened fire aboard a charter bus as he and other students arrived back on campus after seeing a play and having dinner together in Washington, DC. The shooting erupted near a parking garage and prompted a 12-hour lockdown of the Charlottesville campus until the suspect was captured. Many at the school of some 23,000 students huddled inside closets and darkened dorm rooms, while others barricaded the doors of the university\u2019s stately academic buildings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000e356mzujbcstu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The university founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819 also endured the violent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/03\/us\/unite-the-right-victims-damages-reaj\/index.html\">\u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally<\/a> in 2017, which drew hundreds of white nationalists protesting the planned removal of a Confederate statue. A car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one person and injuring several others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000f356mkzroipvc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Authorities had not released a motive in the shooting by Jones, a former member of the university\u2019s football team. Football players Lavel Davis Jr., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/15\/us\/uva-shooting-victim-perry-parents\/index.html\">D\u2019Sean Perry<\/a> and Devin Chandler were killed, while a fourth member of the team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/17\/us\/university-of-virginia-shooting-thursday\/index.html\">Mike Hollins<\/a>, and another student, Marlee Morgan, were wounded.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000g356my71go04l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jones\u2019 time on the team did not overlap with the players he shot, according to the draft copy of the prosecutors\u2019 summary. And there was no indication Jones and the players knew each other or interacted until briefly before the shooting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000h356mtxwechtv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A witness previously told police that Jones had targeted specific victims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000i356mds7r8psj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The summary read by prosecutors said one student told authorities that on the bus ride back to campus, he heard Jones quietly talking to himself, saying, among other things, \u201cI\u2019m sorry if I offended you. I didn\u2019t mean to offend you,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve been through so much in my life,\u201d and \u201cI don\u2019t have any weapons.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000j356mtdmbbntg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jones turned irritable after the football players arrived at the start of the trip, prosecutors said. Jones also sat alone at the play and on the ride home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000k356mehw1ctt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A woman who had previously rejected Jones romantically had swapped phone numbers with Chandler, one of the men who was later killed, according to prosecutors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000l356mdwdi8abg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jones told his adult mentor via text before the shooting to, \u201cJust tell my story. I was a good guy I never meant or initiated any harm to anyone,\u201d prosecutors also stated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000m356mbcw5w4ib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his final message, Jones typed, \u201cthey not getting off this bus.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000n356mjr07ge34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jones also texted several family members, including his mother, to say he loved them, according to prosecutors. He also told his younger brother that something might happen, adding a siren emoji.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000o356mjthu8xdy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the rampage, Jones \u201cmethodically checked each seat until he reached the back of the bus\u201d to shoot some of his victims, the summary said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000p356m2dk5atr0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The university\u2019s president, Jim Ryan, said Jones\u2019 guilty plea represents \u201canother step in a lengthy and painful journey for the families of the victims and for our community.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000q356mdknptq4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe continue to grieve the loss of three beloved members of our community and the injuries suffered by others on the bus,\u201d Ryan\u2019s statement added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000r356my7yl2e93@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Within days of the shooting, university leaders asked for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/18\/us\/university-of-virginia-shooting-friday\/index.html\">outside review<\/a> to investigate the school\u2019s safety policies and procedures, its response to the violence and its prior efforts to assess the potential threat of the student charged. School officials acknowledged Jones previously was on the radar of the university\u2019s threat-assessment team.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000s356mzz5uty4k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In June, Kimberly Wald, a lawyer representing some of the victims and their families, announced that the university agreed to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/01\/us\/university-of-virginia-mass-shooting-settlement-families\/index.html\">$9 million in a settlement<\/a>. Wald said the university should have removed Jones from campus before the attack because he displayed multiple red flags through erratic and unstable behavior.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000t356mi3fxfa9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Attorney Michael Haggard, who represented the families of three of the five shooting victims in the civil case, said they were initially opposed to a plea agreement because they wanted Jones to face trial and receive the maximum punishment possible under the aggravated murder charges, which is life without the possibility of parole.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000u356mfef83qda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was difficult for them. They would have wanted more, but they are anxiously awaiting this sentencing. They want life in prison,\u201d Haggard said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000v356mbkxb3567@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Haggard said the families are eager for the release of the report on the independent investigation, adding, \u201cThey wanted a trial to learn more about what the heck happened.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qm89j6000w356mqy0qyf63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            University officials said they had postponed the report\u2019s release last year over concerns it could affect Jones\u2019 trial.
