(Arc-Chagnaud et al., <em>Cryobiology<\/em>, 2024)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Our sleep architecture analysis revealed a significant increase in the duration of slow-wave sleep during nights following cryostimulation compared to nights without cryostimulation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/nouvelles.umontreal.ca\/en\/article\/2024\/11\/12\/daily-exposure-to-intense-cold-can-improve-sleep-quality\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">says<\/a> kinesiologist Olivier Dupuy, from the University of Montreal in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slow-wave_sleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Slow-wave sleep;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Slow-wave sleep<\/a>, considered the most restorative phase of sleep, increased by an average of 7.3 minutes during the first two sleep cycles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The researchers studied 20 healthy participants, with an average age of 23, over the course of five days. After their daily 5-minute cryostimulation chamber sessions, they went about the remainder of their day as usual \u2013 besides abstaining from alcohol, <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/how-does-caffeine-wake-you-up\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:caffeine;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">caffeine<\/a>, and sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Overnight, the volunteers were fitted with a variety of brain and heart sensors to monitor biological activity and interpret sleep quality. They were also asked to answer a questionnaire the next day about how they slept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">As well as the increase in slow-wave sleep, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.3109\/15622971003637637\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:known to be;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">known to be<\/a> important for memory function, the researchers also found improvements in mood and reductions in anxiety. The benefits were particularly noticeable for women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Women and men did not have identical responses,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/nouvelles.umontreal.ca\/en\/article\/2024\/11\/12\/daily-exposure-to-intense-cold-can-improve-sleep-quality\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">says<\/a> Dupuy. &#8220;This suggests that the dose of cold should be adjusted according to gender, although this requires further study.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Some aspects of sleep weren&#8217;t affected by the cold treatment, including how quickly the participants dozed off, and the time spent in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rapid_eye_movement_sleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:REM sleep;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">REM sleep<\/a> (the period where dreams usually happen, linked to memory consolidation).<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">There&#8217;s a small sample size here, and the researchers didn&#8217;t try to figure out in detail what was linking the intense cold and the improved sleep quality \u2013 so future studies have plenty of scope to build on these findings. There are also many variables that can be altered, like time spent in the cryochamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Existing evidence shows whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonomicneuroscience.com\/article\/S1566-0702(10)00064-0\/abstract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:calm down the heart;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">calm down the heart<\/a> after exercise, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0022748\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reduce inflammation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reduce inflammation<\/a>, and improve <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-msse\/fulltext\/2015\/07000\/whole_body_cryostimulation_limits_overreaching_in.12.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:general well-being;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">general well-being<\/a>.
