But the tragedy has altered their behavior.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5y000b356m1krf599m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn the beginning \u2026 I\u2019m a girl, so all my runner friends and \u2026 everybody texted each other. But he, too, takes extra precautions by making verbal contact with strangers on the trail \u2013 \u201cyou know, just say hi, things like that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5y000d356mvgwqdaw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt kind of sends off a warning signal\u201d to potential criminals that he\u2019s watching them, too, Pettyjohn said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5y000e356m2iqyhgig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much has changed since Riley\u2019s body was found in the woods near Lake Herrick on February 22. Her killer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/14\/politics\/bill-clinton-laken-riley-campaign\/index.html\">Jose Ibarra<\/a>, was convicted of murder, aggravated assault with intent to rape, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/laken-riley-murder-trial-11-20-24#cm3q9ndoq0000356mq4ikhfkp\">a spate of other crimes<\/a>. Much of the park\u2019s trail system is unpaved, attracting mountain bikers and rugged runners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qktnlo000d356m5xs8r3yt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             And the trail winding around Lake Herrick had long been a source of serenity for visitors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5z000i356mf3h3ijvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was a nice way to spend an afternoon after work, unwind a bit \u2026 just a form of relaxation for me,\u201d Pettyjohn said during a walk through the woods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5z000j356mrdzjqgwv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the popular trail was largely abandoned for weeks after Riley\u2019s killing, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5z000k356mwp3q8sma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey had just about the entire trail section marked off for investigation purposes,\u201d he said. Hardly anyone ventured out to the trail for about a month, Pettyjohn said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5z000n356mjjvq8pkg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt felt empty. And I could tell that people were trying to give it some space for a little bit longer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qlw742000l356mfwyt3dqn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            UGA pharmacy student Margaret Fawcett said she walks with heightened awareness at night and offers to accompany her friend, an avid runner, when her friend jogs on the same wooded trail where Riley was attacked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qlwgcj000r356mmvvutaoj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSometimes I do get nervous for her,\u201d Fawcett said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3qkn0ys0008356m288ccyi1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou would hopefully think that a campus is a safe place to be. But after (Riley\u2019s killing), it definitely makes me more alert.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5z000o356md8d7ef48@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since Riley\u2019s death, UGA deployed a host of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.uga.edu\/news\/79090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new safety measures<\/a> \u2013 which have made students like Kota more comfortable running through the woods or walking back from the library at night.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3lo8y5z000p356m4b3h8jdt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She cited a significant increase in the number of officers seen around campus as well as more safety lights.\n    <\/p>\n<div
