The National Weather Service has been issuing flood alerts for years, here is how do you understand them and what do they mean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">When you hear that your area has a &#8220;high risk&#8221; of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/7-facts-you-should-know-about-flash-floods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flash flooding<\/a>, it\u2019s an urgent matter that needs to be taken seriously as it&#8217;s among the most dangerous outlooks that forecasters can issue.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA&#8217;s Weather Prediction Center (WPC) is the agency responsible for issuing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/qpf\/excessive_rainfall_outlook_ero.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">daily excessive rainfall outlooks<\/a>. The outlooks use four categories \u2013 marginal, slight, moderate and high \u2013 to indicate the probability of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/how-heavy-is-it-really-going-to-rain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excessive rainfall<\/a> leading to rapid-onset flooding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/html\/fam2.shtml#excessrain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">within 25 miles of a point<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">When a high risk \u2013 the highest risk level that can be issued \u2013 is in place, it means severe, widespread flash <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/flood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">floods <\/a>are expected in the highlighted areas.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Areas that don&#8217;t normally experience flash flooding, could,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/para\/para_images\/ERO_Categories.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WPC says<\/a>. for 39% of flood-related fatalities and 83% of flood-related damages in the continental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlexJLamers\/status\/1034528775680217090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research by WPC meteorologists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">What&#8217;s more, 46% of high-risk flood days have at least one fatality or injury, and 62% of such days have at least $1 million in damages, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GCarbin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Greg Carbin<\/a>, forecast operations branch chief at the WPC, noted <a href=\"https:\/\/tornadosummit.org\/archive\/2019\/files\/Presentations\/GregCarbin-Waterlogged.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in the research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a street on which you live or even your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home<\/a> are all areas that could become inundated by floodwaters on a high-risk flood day.
