{"id":128588,"date":"2024-11-22T00:05:46","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T17:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=128588"},"modified":"2024-11-22T00:05:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T17:05:46","slug":"top-war-crimes-court-issues-arrest-warrants-for-netanyahu-ex-defense-minister-and-a-hamas-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=128588","title":{"rendered":"Top war-crimes court issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, ex-defense minister and a Hamas leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>THE HAGUE (AP) \u2014 The world\u2019s top war-crimes court issued arrest warrants Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas\u2019 military chief, accusing them of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/icc-khan-netanyahu-070941d21ccd1f2b9611032b88527575\">crimes against humanity<\/a><\/span> in connection with the 13-month war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The warrants said there was reason to believe Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have used \u201cstarvation as a method of warfare\u201d by restricting humanitarian aid and have intentionally targeted civilians in Israel\u2019s campaign against Hamas in Gaza \u2014 charges Israeli officials deny.<\/p>\n<p>The action by the International Criminal Court came as the death toll from Israel\u2019s campaign in Gaza <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-lebanon-hezbollah-iran-news-11-20-2024-5da3ce43df8662fe9eeab4ad804bdc0f\"> passed 44,000 people, <\/a><\/span> according to local health authorities, who say more than half of those killed were women and children. Their count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say hunger has become widespread across Gaza and may have reached famine levels in the north of the territory, which is under siege by Israeli troops.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu condemned the warrant against him, saying Israel \u201crejects with disgust the absurd and false actions\u201d by the court. In a statement released by his office, he said: \u201cThere is nothing more just than the war that Israel has been waging in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision turns Netanyahu and the others into internationally wanted suspects and could <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-hamas-gaza-international-criminal-court-hague-palestinians-1f683a6e2e150d91c415eb1d0a19a44d\">further isolate them<\/a><\/span>, putting them at risk of arrest when they travel abroad. But its practical implications could be limited since Israel and its major ally, the United States, are not members of the court.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli leaders, politicians and officials across the spectrum denounced the warrants and the ICC. The new defense minister, Israel Katz, who replaced Gallant earlier this month, said Thursday\u2019s decision is \u201ca moral disgrace, entirely tainted by antisemitism, and drags the international judicial system to an unprecedented low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Human rights groups applauded the move.<\/p>\n<p>The warrants against both sides \u201cbreak through the perception that certain individuals are beyond the reach of the law,\u201d the associate international justice director at Human Rights Watch, Balkees Jarrah, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The decision came six months after ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan requested the warrants.<\/p>\n<p>The court issued a warrant for Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas\u2019 armed wing, over the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-hamas-war-one-year-anniversary-cf123f95609051e8e8eaf6aebe661b6a\">Oct. 7, 2023, attacks<\/a><\/span> that triggered Israel\u2019s offensive in Gaza. It said it found reasonable grounds to believe Deif was involved in murder, rape, torture and the taking of hostages amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>In the Hamas-led attack, militants stormed into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people \u2014 mostly civilians \u2014 and taking some 250 others hostage. Around 100 Israelis remain captive in Gaza, around a third of them believed to be dead.<\/p>\n<p>Khan withdrew requests for warrants for two other senior Hamas figures, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/yahya-sinwar-hamas-leader-killed-obituary-gaza-6965bea4270313c1f1501335c705ac9a\">Yahya Sinwar<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-hamas-israel-30968a7acb31cd8b259de9650014b779\">Ismail Haniyeh<\/a><\/span>, who have both since been killed. Israel says it also killed Deif in an airstrike, but Hamas has never confirmed his death.<\/p>\n<p>The warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant were issued by a three-judge panel in a unanimous decision.<\/p>\n<p>The panel said there were reasonable grounds to believe they \u201cintentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival,\u201d including food, water, medicine, fuel and electricity.<\/p>\n<p>The judges also rejected an Israeli petition challenging the court\u2019s jurisdiction on the grounds that Israel is not a member state in the tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the warrants, none of the suspects is likely to face judges in The Hague anytime soon. Member countries are required to detain suspects facing a warrant if they set foot on their soil, but the court has no way to enforce that.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is wanted on an ICC warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, recently visited <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mongolia-russia-putin-international-criminal-court-warrant-4c79850ecf409287924e3d96218abc78\">Mongolia, a member state in the court but also a Russian ally.<\/a><\/span> He was not arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the threat of arrest now complicates any travel abroad by Netanyahu and Gallant \u2014 including to close allies of Israel. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the warrants are binding on all 27 members countries of the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>France signaled it could arrest Netanyahu if he came to its territory. Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine called it a \u201ccomplex legal issue\u201d but said France supports the court\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombating impunity is our priority,\u201d he said. \u201cOur response will align with these principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamas in a statement welcomed the warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant but made no mention of the one against Deif.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s opposition leaders fiercely criticized the ICC\u2019s move. Benny Gantz, a retired general and political rival to Netanyahu, said it showed \u201cmoral blindness\u201d and was a \u201cshameful stain of historic proportion that will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yair Lapid, another opposition leader, called it a \u201cprize for terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s campaign has caused heavy destruction across Gaza and driven almost the entire population of 2.3 million people from their homes, leaving most dependent on aid to survive.<\/p>\n<p>The ICC panel pointed to Netanyahu and Gallant\u2019s role \u201cin impeding humanitarian aid \u2026 and their failure to facilitate relief by all means at their disposal,\u201d noting that moves to let in more aid have been \u201cconditional\u201d and \u201cinsufficient.\u201d The lack of food, water and medical supplies created conditions that lead to civilian deaths, the panel said.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after Hamas\u2019 attack on southern Israel, Gallant announced a total seal on Gaza, vowing not to let in food, fuel or other supplies. Under U.S. pressure, Israel began allowing a trickle of humanitarian aid to enter a few weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>Israel now says it puts no limit on the amount of supplies into Gaza.
