The majority of Americans do not get enough fiber in their diet, and Buettner points to the microbiome\u2019s dependence on fiber to function properly. A cup of beans provides about half of your daily fiber recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>You can find beans for less than $2 a pound, he says, making them an accessible addition to any diet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In his book, Buettner recommends eating beans every day, writing they <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2022\/12\/13\/blue-zone-diet-for-longevity\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2022\/12\/13\/blue-zone-diet-for-longevity\/\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201creign supreme in the blue zones and are the cornerstone of every longevity diet in the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While beans have been serving people for millennia, they seem to be having a viral moment now\u2014and for good reason. One food creator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/violetwitchel\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/violetwitchel\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Violet Witchel<\/a>, has gone viral for her dense bean salad recipes, full of hearty ingredients and a range of beans from chickpeas, butter beans, and black beans. The salad, better known as \u201cDBS,\u201d has wooed meal-preppers who are looking for filling recipes that are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@violet.cooks\/video\/7372786192506473771?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@violet.cooks\/video\/7372786192506473771?lang=en\" rel=\"noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@violet.cooks\/video\/7372786192506473771?lang=en\">tasty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nuts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Eat a handful of nuts a day, Buettner says, whether they are almonds, pistachios, walnuts, or cashews, to name a few. They contain protein and fiber and can reduce the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and inflammation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Whole fruits and leafy greens<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One key to eating like you live in a blue zone is eating a variety of whole fruits and vegetables every day, specifically adding in leafy greens, which are filled with vitamins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in the blue zones eat an impressive variety of garden vegetables and leafy greens (especially spinach, kale, beet and turnip tops, chard, and collards) when they are in season; they pickle or dry the surplus to enjoy during the off-season,\u201d Buettner writes in his book.<\/p>\n<p>Maintaining lasting dietary changes only works if people stick with their habits. And you\u2019re more likely to maintain a habit if you enjoy it. Regularly seeking out your favorite vegetable and fruit during your grocery run can take the stress out of purchasing things you aren\u2019t excited about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sweet potatoes\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sweet potatoes contain complex carbohydrates and protein, not to mention they are cheap and accessible, Buettner says. They are packed with vitamins crucial for strengthening the gut microbiome, which helps with digestion and strengthens the immune system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turmeric\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Turmeric, a common ingredient found in curries, is a major anti-inflammatory spice, and has been used to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/herb\/turmeric\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/herb\/turmeric\" rel=\"noopener\">digestive issues, liver problems, and wounds<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd turmeric impacts the hippocampus, which is a part of the brain that helps regulate stress hormones,\u201d Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/book.umanaidoomd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/book.umanaidoomd.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>This Is Your Brain on Food<\/em><\/a>, previously told <em>Fortune. <\/em>It can help prevent chronic stress, which can lead to heart problems.<\/p>\n<p>Consider adding the spice to your next <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2022\/08\/29\/black-tea-can-help-you-live-longer\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2022\/08\/29\/black-tea-can-help-you-live-longer\/\" rel=\"noopener\">cup of tea<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buttner hopes people see that eating in a way that promotes health and longevity is not out of reach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople tend to think [of] the expensive super foods, or even expensive fresh produce, which is out of reach for a lot of Americans,\u201d he says. \u201cIn a blue zone, people are eating peasant food, so they\u2019re eating the beans and the greens that are growing in vacant lots and whole grains, which are cheap.
