He told Washington <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-china-relations-red-lines-xi-trump-biden-taiwan-tariffs-2024-11\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">not to cross<\/a> &#8220;four red lines&#8221; \u2014 which analysts say is a clear message for the incoming Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Excluded mobile ad on desktop --><\/p>\n<p>The four hot-button issues are Taiwan, democracy and human rights, China&#8217;s path and system, and the country&#8217;s rights to development.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are the most important guardrails and safety nets for China-US relations,&#8221; Xi said, according to a readout from the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xw\/zyxw\/202411\/t20241117_11527672.html\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chinese foreign ministry.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Xi&#8217;s explicit message is notable because it appears to be the first time these &#8220;red lines&#8221; were issued at the presidential level, said Igor Khrestin, a managing director of global policy at the George W. Bush Institute, a think tank.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Excluded mobile ad on desktop --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an attempt to &#8216;set the floor&#8217; for US-China relations, in light of the uncertainly surrounding the second Trump Administration,&#8221; Khrestin told Business Insider.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, it&#8217;s not the first time Beijing has mentioned &#8220;red lines&#8221; in diplomatic settings and the four no-go zones are consistent with China&#8217;s position on the issues. <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-relationship-china-dangerous-era-xi-jinping-blinken-meeting-2024-4\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">Foreign Minister Wang Yi<\/a> has warned about not crossing Beijing&#8217;s &#8220;red lines&#8221; in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks show Beijing is paying close attention to the nomination of China hawks in Trump&#8217;s administration, including Florida <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/donald-trump-white-house-staff-cabinet-picks-list-2024-11#marco-rubio-4\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\"><u>Sen. The area is strategically important to the US as a leader in semiconductor production and as a key security hub.<\/p>\n<p>The sensitivity over Taiwan is even more apparent because last weekend was also the first time that Xi reportedly called Taiwanese president William Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party \u2014 whom Beijing branded as a separatist \u2014 by name. Chinese leaders rarely mention Taiwanese leaders by name in public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the US side cares about maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait, it is crucial that it sees clearly the true nature of Lai Ching-te and the DPP authorities in seeking &#8216;Taiwan independence,&#8217; handles the Taiwan question with extra prudence, unequivocally opposes &#8216;Taiwan independence,&#8217; and supports China&#8217;s peaceful reunification,&#8221; according to Chinese ministry readout.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Excluded mobile ad on desktop --><\/p>\n<p>However, the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/11\/16\/readout-of-president-joe-bidens-meeting-with-president-xi-jinping-of-the-peoples-republic-of-china-3\/\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">White House&#8217;s readout<\/a> of the same meeting did not mention Lai. That prompted <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aLGqyNf2BcE\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tsai Ming-yen,<\/a> the director of Taiwan&#8217;s National Security Bureau, to question if China&#8217;s state media and its foreign ministry were using cognitive warfare tactics.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fea3bd85-25e4-4307-b9f8-01c12368ec19\" data-toc-id=\"fea3bd85-25e4-4307-b9f8-01c12368ec19\">Rockier times ahead of US and China<\/h2>\n<p id=\"fea3bd85-25e4-4307-b9f8-01c12368ec19\">In 2018, Trump said he had an <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/business\/trump-says-he-has-incredible-relationship-with-xi-idUSKCN1O03SL\/\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;incredible relationship&#8221;<\/a> with Xi.
