Their study, published in the journal Fungal Ecology in October, found evidence that these bottom feeders possess memory and decision-making abilities despite not having a central nervous system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/these-forest-fungi-are-a-bounty-for-arizona-mushroom-hunters\"><strong>READ MORE<\/strong>: These forest fungi are a bounty for Arizona mushroom hunters<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fungi grow by releasing spores that turn into long, filamentous threads that are thinner than a strand of human hair, explained Nicholas P. Money, a fungal biologist at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, who was not involved with the study. The fungi then bundle together these microscopic filaments to form cords that allow them to branch out, similar to neural pathways in the brain, forming a larger colony known as the mycelium.<\/p>\n<p>To set up their experiment, Fukasawa\u2019s team incubated <em>Phanerochaete velutina<\/em> (a fungus that infects peach and nectarine trees) on small wooden blocks before transferring them to soil plates. In these soil plates, the fungi-laden blocks were arranged into two patterns, a circle and a cross, and left to decompose.<\/p>\n<p>Several months later, the mycelial network had retained the same circle and cross patterns that it had initially been placed in. Photo by Yu Fukasawa et al.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The placement of the wood blocks had \u201cquite profound effects upon the way that the fungus grows, and that suggests that the fungus is actually able to learn something about the pattern of food, the placement of food in its environment,\u201d Money said.<\/p>\n<p>Classical philosophers held the belief that the ability to form thoughts is a prerequisite of consciousness, exemplified by 17th-century philosopher Ren\u00e9 Descartes\u2019 famed proclamation, \u201cI think, therefore I am.\u201d But the findings by Fukasawa\u2019s team serve as a testament to the \u201cextraordinary sensitivity\u201d and \u201cbasic, primitive examples of consciousness\u201d found in nature, Money said.<\/p>\n<p>If the fungi lacked any cognition, they would have simply spread out along the blocks without consideration for patterns created by the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the fungal mycelium was able to recognize and relay information about its environment throughout its entire network in order to change its direction of growth accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Money described the findings as novel evidence of fungi\u2019s simple \u201cspatial memory,\u201d a characteristic that researchers are increasingly discovering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/how-studying-arctic-ground-squirrels-can-help-advance-human-brain-health\"><strong>READ MORE<\/strong>: How studying arctic ground squirrels can help advance human brain health<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This study is particularly exciting to Money because the field of fungal biology has in the last two to three years only started to recognize the sensitivity of fungi to their environment \u2014 a phenomenon he says has been critically overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Fukasawa\u2019s team] is the first to actually figure out that the fungi are being really smart in the way that they explore the environment,\u201d Money said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_502258\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-502258\" src=\"https:\/\/d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net\/static\/2024\/11\/Phanerochaete.velutina2.-.lindsey.jpg\" alt=\"Phanerochaete.velutina2.-.lindsey\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"size-full wp-image-502258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net\/static\/2024\/11\/Phanerochaete.velutina2.-.lindsey.jpg 640w, https:\/\/d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net\/static\/2024\/11\/Phanerochaete.velutina2.-.lindsey-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net\/static\/2024\/11\/Phanerochaete.velutina2.-.lindsey-425x283.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-502258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phanerochaete velutina\u00a0in Commanster, Belgium.
