The research looked at links between taking medications for at least five years, and the chance of developing dementia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>While the research doesn&#8217;t prove a casaul relationship between these drugs and dementia, it strongly suggests that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cardiac-arrest-and-heart-attacks-arent-the-same-heres-how-to-tell-them-apart\">faulty heart<\/a> might also open the door to cognitive decline \u2013 and perhaps that certain treatments can look after both the heart and the brain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144236\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/BrainModel.jpg\" alt=\"Brain model\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" class=\"wp-image-144236 size-full\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drugs protecting the heart seem to protect the brain too. (<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/brown-brain-decor-in-selective-focus-photography-3KGF9R_0oHs\">Robina Weermeijer\/Unsplash<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The link between cardiovascular health and dementia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/JAHA.123.030780\">isn&#8217;t a new one<\/a>, and studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/STROKEAHA.121.032614\">previously suggested<\/a> that protecting the heart could also buffer against cognitive decline. However, so far the evidence to support that idea hasn&#8217;t been strong.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previous studies have focused on individual drugs and specific patient groups, but in this study, we take a broader approach,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ki.se\/cardiovascular-drugs-may-reduce-dementia-risk\">says<\/a> epidemiologist Alexandra Wennberg, from the Karolinska Institute.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The researchers looked at the impact of taking medication to manage hypertension, cholesterol levels, blood thinning, and fluids in the body (the diuretics that are often prescribed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/medical\/drug-cabinet\/diuretics\">treat heart failure<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>These drugs were associated with a 4\u201325 percent lower risk of dementia, the data showed, and taking multiple medications typically had a greater effect in reducing risk than using a single drug on its own.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can see a clear link between long-term use \u2013 five years or more \u2013 of these drugs and reduced risk of dementia in older age,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ki.se\/cardiovascular-drugs-may-reduce-dementia-risk\">says<\/a> epidemiologist Mozhu Ding, from the Karolinska Institute.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>However, another type of heart medication had the opposite effect.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Antiplatelet drugs, which stop <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platelet\">platelets<\/a> in the blood from clumping together and triggering strokes, were associated with a 13\u201325 percent increase in dementia risk \u2013 possibly because the anti-clumping effect makes brain microbleeds more likely, the researchers suggest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144495\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/IllustrationOfPlateletsClumpingInBlood642.jpg\" alt=\"Active blood platelets, illustration\" width=\"642\" height=\"500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-144495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/IllustrationOfPlateletsClumpingInBlood642.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/IllustrationOfPlateletsClumpingInBlood642-533x415.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/IllustrationOfPlateletsClumpingInBlood642-600x467.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Illustration showing platelets in blood clumping together. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/MAFxbZIcps0\/\">sciencephoto\/Canva<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition, short-term use of any of the cardiovascular drugs studied was linked to a 13\u201330 percent increase in dementia risk \u2013 which may be down to the medication being started too late in life to have a protective effect on cognition.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>A possible reason for the increase is that heart conditions may raise dementia risk.
