That bit of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/business\/1980\/09\/07\/nature-abhors-a-vacuum-and-markets-uncertainty\/b7314886-940d-484a-8852-b8e89656b796\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street wisdom<\/a> helps explain their ebb and flow since Donald J. Trump\u2019s victory on Election Day, and even earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Stocks and bond yields began rising early in October, when Wall Street <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.predictit.org\/markets\/detail\/7456\/Who-will-win-the-2024-US-presidential-election\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">concluded<\/a> that Mr. Trump would win. The market surge accelerated after Election Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet for the markets, uncertainty hasn\u2019t vanished. It\u2019s merely coming from another direction. Because President-elect Trump\u2019s approach to politics and economics is so disruptive and unconventional, markets have been straining to digest the implications of the power transfer in Washington, switching erratically between elation, confusion and occasional bouts of high anxiety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Aspects of the Trump platform are balm for the markets. He promises lower corporate taxes and less regulation: Those assurances are being widely interpreted as a recipe for fat company profits and a prosperous stock market. The president-elect is also expected to try to extend <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/effects-of-the-tax-cuts-and-jobs-act-a-preliminary-analysis\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tax cuts that he signed into law in 2017<\/a> and that expire at the end of 2025. Over the short-term, these measures are expected to stimulate economic growth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But not all of his program is positive for growth. Mr. Trump is a self-described \u201ctariff man,\u201d calling for sharply increasing tariffs on China and lesser but substantial levies on all other trading nations. Furthermore, he has promised a drastic reduction in immigration and a tsunami of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/18\/us\/politics\/trump-military-mass-deportation.html\" title=\"\">deportations<\/a> \u2014 a disaster for thousands of families, which, in cold financial terms, would reduce the supply of labor in the United States. Textbook economics tells us that adding tariffs and reducing the work force could slow the economy and spur inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some companies might well benefit from these specific policies. Stocks of private prison firms like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geogroup.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Geo<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.corecivic.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">CoreCivic<\/a>, which can build and operate temporary detention centers, have risen with the president-elect\u2019s fortunes, and shares of smaller domestic companies with little international revenue jumped after the election. Also rising, companies that provide services to dentists.
