We&#8217;d advise the public to avoid the area where possible.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Waiting with no guarantees&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Laurence Kemball-Cook, who was due to fly Portugal, said he and his family faced delays of up to 90 minutes getting through security.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe were sitting there waiting for a slightly delayed flight and one of the staff rushes over and says \u2018you\u2019ve got to evacuate right now\u2019. They are covered in silver foil heat warmers. \" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\"\/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Marco Pajo<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Passengers had to leave the airport and wait in near-freezing temperatures outside<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Several British Airways departures are delayed by at least one hour and 40 minutes, including to Orlando, USA; Funchal, Portugal; and Tenerife, Spain.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Spanish carrier Vueling ordered inbound flights from Barcelona and Seville to turn around and return to their starting airports.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And a Norwegian flight to Bergen departed two hours and seven minutes late.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Local bus services have also been affected and are unable to run to Gatwick, according to Southern.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve also been advised of local road closures too, so if you are driving to the airport, please be aware of this when planning your journey,\u201d a spokesperson said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">London Victoria railway station is advising also those travelling to avoid heading to Gatwick Airport.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Station announcements and screens are advising the public to not travel towards the area and to wait at Victoria Station.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The north terminal is unaffected by the evacuation. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Crowds building up&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Meanwhile, travel journalist Simon Calder said about 100,000 passengers would be flying in and out of Gatwick Airport today.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">About half of those passengers would be using the south terminal, he said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Flights are still landing.
